  1. Scumbag 3rd party seller on Amazon. I ordered a book and they said it was out of stock and they are asking me to cancel the order although they have also the function to cancel the order on their side. Further more they are impersonating Amazon. I did not cancel and reported that.
My current problem is that the book is not available anywhere.

  2. It's the end of 2024 and I ordered 2GB DDR2 RAM. I have a EEE PC 1000H but it has only 1GB. I had to downgrade because the RAM went to another machine that was gifted. It was fine at that time because I didn't use the EEE PC. I want to revive it to power my cheap-ass Chinese CNC router. With the roadside found display it might work quite well. I have a piece of wood I want to engrave for displaying my house number and name and need something to operate the CNC router without hogging my main laptop.

  3. I dread tomorrow. Tomorrow is the day it is legal to buy fireworks in Germany. This year the advertisement for fireworks is amped up threefold to what I used to see.

  4. Good that some relatives are easy to please with board games. My cheap board game haul that I accumulated that I got for only 15€ per game in average is shrinking at a good pace. Even better that almost all of the games are 3 to 4 times the price now. It definitely alleviated the pressure to find *something* and something *inexpensive*. This year I spent something like 30€ per person at max, close to 20€ in average.

  5. Got my ESP8266 micro controller with IR receiver and sender working. I recorded my TV remote button presses and now it works as expected with the ESPUI library for the browser front-end. I want to add a REST API interface so I can write another program to use the REST API. I want to write a multi-platform .net program that can be deployed on Linux, Windows, Android, IOS, and WebAssembly (web browser). I don't like the ESPUI library that much. It works for sure but I have problems with the design. In the future I can add more devices to control. Also I think about having a presence detector that automatically pauses youtube videos when I leave the room.

  6. @zeldatra At least you got practice, even when it's not the best. I'm a software developer for over 7 years and in my last project (ended a few days ago) it is littered with crimes I did. Mostly because I was not given enough time to do it properly. It is of great value to know which "technical debt" one has caused and how to mitigate it next time. There are only a few principles one has to follow to write good code like writing modular code that has as few dependencies as possible to solve the problem, naming the variables and functions and classes clear enough such that they convey their intent unmistakably, and writing code that can be reused. The last point is a nice to have but for a small project it is probably too much hassle except it is really needed more than once in the program. Otherwise software is malleable enough to be rewritten with the power given by the knowledge of hindsight, meaning good ol' refactoring.

  7. I watched "Reincarnated as a Sword" on Netflix. It is not very good. Interesting in some aspects but it is very shallow.

  8. Next time I'll get one of those soldering iron with a solder sucker integrated.

  9. Life lesson: It's easier to solder two stacking PCBs together via pins than to remove all that solder to disassemble. I got a new solder sucker and it sucks. I mean it is not very good. That solder sucker is an iFixit solder sucker and i'd give it a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars. The nozzle is way too big for 2.54mm pitched pins and the suction action itself is a little bit too weak.

  10. I'm realizing that I need more upbeat and funky music. My MP3 player is full of orchestral soundtracks. I like them for sure but it's quite one-sided right now. Something with high energy like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRlcs7MI0uY&list=OLAK5uy_nq91NTOs3Pj9IdQOWyE_iVM_sPhqZVVAE&index=13

  11. @zeldatra In the Kaito Files DLC he has socks on when he enters the Doctor's home. https://youtu.be/gAqdA1D9YJM?t=11438 I believe that they are socks and not shoes. They are very dark and featureless.

  12. I binge-read the final book of "Delicious in Dungeon". It was a very satisfying read. The most prominent thing I respect about the book is that after the climax there is a whole book that serves as an epilogue. A lot of stories just wind up cut short and don't give the reader time to say goodbye to the characters. What do the heroes do when the adventure is over? What are their dreams and goals after that? The last chapters gave time to resolve character arcs, tie some things from the earlier chapters into the final scenes, and give some needed introspection and levity. I'm glad I read the books but without the anime I hadn't pulled the trigger.

  13. I'm reading Delicious in Dungeon. Right now I'm at volume 9 out of 14. Oh boy. I liked the anime but being at the point I'm at reading I elevate this status tenfold. A revelation so big it changed my perspective. Not many things have genuinely did that to me.

  14. I really warmed up to the anime Dan Da Dan. At this point I'm looking forward to new episodes.

  16. Christmas D&D adventure idea: A monster that breaks into people's houses during winter solstice but it leaves its eggs under the tree. Usually nothing happens as the recipients are asleep and eat the eggs for breakfast. However when a group of outsiders (the players' characters) happen to observe break-ins the monster turns hostile. Also when the eggs aren't eaten until the end of day they hatch and the true horror can begin.

  17. The Star Wars Skeleton Crew series is pretty solid. All the 3 episodes that are released so far are good. It shows more quality in story telling than most of the other streaming series. Andor is obviously better but that's almost an unfair comparison. The only irksome part is the almost real-life looking suburb that feels not very Star-Wars-y. I can guarantee it is on purpose and has lore reasons. I can glance over it because so far I don't feel like everything has purpose behind and doesn't appear to be random for the sake for being different.

  18. The calendar printing season has begun. My mother gets her yearly request of a calendar with boxes that are as big as possible and with no date sharing the same box. Also I'm printing a calendar for myself for the garbage pickup for the next year. It helps greatly not to forget when to put out the trash bins. So far I only missed only one time because I forgot. Also I missed some on purpose because my plastic bin wasn't even quarter full and I was lazy.

  19. Jentry Chau on Netflix is a fine show. It has some neat qualities like the art style and a way not to make dumb characters. Selfishly motivated but understandable. The plot has some flaws but nothing appallingly terrible. Could be easily fixed if there were a little bit more "filler" episodes to flesh out some characters as some parts feel a little bit more rushed. I only really dislike the needle-drop music and most of the soundtrack. Not my style.

  21. Wrote a terminal program for creating playlists. It does the job but could be more streamlined and not yet ready to automatically create playlists for all albums. Right now I can specify a folder and grabs all its files and assembles them to a m3u playlist. To my dismay my mp3 player ignores the # tag when listing the tracks. Instead it shows the whole path, which makes it harder to see the track name.

  22. Due to my FiiO X1 MP3 player not being able to scan the whole SD-card to generate the music database I have to resort to manually creating playlists. I need it as the file structure of many folders has subfolders for each disc. The worst thing is that when I open the .m3u playlist generated by VLC the player only accepts the paths to the files only as absolute paths and there cannot be any "HTML"-coded strings like %20 for a space character. I guess I have to write my own little program to automate it a bit as all solutions I saw involved using a program and doing manual edits anyway.

  23. Watched "Uncle from another world" and the last season of "Beastars" on Netflix. Honestly Uncle from another world was way more enjoyable than Beastars.

  25. The HDMI to VGA adapter I ordered DOES NOT WORK. UUUUGH. Reading reviews for all the adapters doesn't fill me with confidence. Most of them seem have to have a high likelihood not work either.

  27. I put out my EEE PC 1000H out of the mothballs for testing the monitor. I wanted to update it but I faced a myriad of package conflicts and other annoyances. It has nothing important on it, so I have to resort to reinstall the whole system anew. If it's the Windows way why wouldn't it work for Linux?

  28. Found an old TFT monitor at the curb. It's a Benq T71W from 2007. It has only VGA, 17'', and the controls are busted. I cannot open the display menu or turn it off. Otherwise it works. I don't know what to make with that.

  29. Been watching the anime Dandadan. It is surely strange but intriguing. The first episodes have a HUGE turn off and I can't blame anyone jumping off. Also the visuals look both impressing and confusing. Especially the action scenes get disorientating very fast. Otherwise in terms of story it is not so bad, at least for now.

  30. To my surprise my MP3 player (FiiO X1) is about as expensive in the second hand market as it was when I bought it new. Here and there there are cheaper ones but I guess even iPod classic clones retain some value. I wouldn't buy it again. It has some serious performance limitations. I put so much music on it that it can't scan all files to build the database. Since I have it I'm still happy with it although I haven't used it for a long time. Firstly because I didn't need it but also I haven't found it for almost two years because it was lost in one of my boxes. I found it this week by accident and intent to use it again, especially in the car and going out in general. I am even upgrading the SD card from 128gb to 512gb. That upgrade is basically free as Amazon has screwed up my order for that SD card.
