I think the people that bother me the most at work aren't even the people who make me do the most work for them but rather the people who take out all their anger and frustration at the store out on me, or really just people who use workers as emotional punching bags for whatever reason.

So why is a bad anime like SAO so popular compared to a good anime like .hack or log horizon?

@polarbear Probably because "bad" and "good" are just loose media terms reflective of individualistic taste more than anything else. But the actual answer to your question is that SAO is an unabashed power fantasy that deliberately empowers the viewer with its protagonist and plays into their lecherousness with voyeuristic shots peppered throughout. It has high budget action sequences with fairly widespread audience appeal and uses setpieces that revolve around a relatable but also marketable gaming medium though without taking a critical view of that medium in its writing (essentially further playing into the power fantasy I was speaking of earlier, No Game No Life is sort of successful for this same reason). The bottom line it has an audience and gives them what they want, no questions asked. Do I like SAO? No, not at all, it's definitely not my thing. But I understand its appeal and why its so popular and successful.

@polarbear People like powerful characters who can in turn empower them in their media, and even though different people approach media for different reasons it just so happens that SAO's writing model has widespread appeal with its market.

@metaltao In the phrase "light out" the word "light" is being used as a verb to remove the light from a source like a lantern or candle (which in retrospect seems kind of counter-intuitive, but it's actually just because it's a warped version of "turn out the lights"). In the phrase "lights out", it is often a shortened version of "knocking someone's lights out", as in knocking someone out. Though "lights out" can be used with the former meaning of "light out", so I don't know if I'd say the two have completely different meanings as much as one possess specific connotations unique from the other.
