  2. I drove about 1200km (745 miles) this weekend. I visited my grandparents and picked up my mother back home. I drove most of the time 150km/h (93 mph) and needed only 5 hours for each direction. I'm somewhat exhausted.

  4. Lubing my bike chains was a success. Cycling feels a little bit more smoother now. I think I have a little bit less resistance so I could cycle with one higher gear than usual with the same force. Maybe my brain tricks me thinking that. At least the gunk is scrubbed off. I wonder why there are no more bike chain covers that attempt to fully enclose the chain.

    • @adiwan I think stuff like that and tire fenders fell out of favor due to so-called "weight weenies" but I know less than Jon Snow so.... :p

    • @scribus Tire fenders are practically standard here as well as half-enclosed chain guards. Also a rack is basically standard, except for mountain and racing bikes. I just looked up and I found some after-market fully-enclosed chain guards. Only "Holland bikes" have the fully-enclosed bike chain guard out of the box. I guess I never put that much attention to that feature.

    • @scribus Thanks. I was really lucky mixing the base color to get the gray with the blue-ish tint I was aiming for. Because of the size I bought a cheap acrylic paint set and mixed white and black in a 1:1 ratio and then added about 1/3 of that amount with navy blue, and added a bunch of drops of silver metallic paint. Depending on the time of day it looks more blue or gray. On the other hand I had troubles getting rid of the layer lines using filler primer, sandpaper and files, especially the sides towards the center.

  18. I'm baffled by the number of battery-operated (internal rechargeable via USB or conventionally insertable AA or AAA) lights for bikes that are being sold. There is a thing called dynamo. No hassle recharging, always attached at the bike, reliable. There are hub dynamos that have almost no resistance (only the induced electrical field has some resistance) and are silent. It makes me somewhat annoyed and mad that people buy this crap. Additional lights... fine. But they are mostly advertised as main front and rear lights.

    • @adiwan I always kind of wanted one on my bike, but I also get ripped off so damn often that I can't bring myself to make a serious investment in it. They stole my seat!! I've had people steal my little speedometer, but not the tire attachment that actually makes it work! I watched a jerk ride off on my bike itself, and was a half-swcond too late in being certain to clothesline them... and my present borderline-cheapo bike is all rusted and sun-damaged.

    • @scribus Purchasing it used might be an option. On ebay in Germany the prices are between 30€ and 40€. I guess it won't be cheaper anytime soon. Pokemon Snap for the N64 is cheaper as a cart only offer but complete in box it's still at original retail prices.

  25. I summed up how much I cycled so far in the last 6 months, with the help of the Google Maps Timeline feature. I cycled about 120km. Due to some really annoying data entry of the streets and junctions, and the infrequent and inaccurate GPS sampling, not every trip was correctly recorded. Good for data protection but also bad for this application, so I had to guesstimate.

  26. Although I have a bike I'm interested in having a second bike more geared towards comfortable rides in the city: a ladies' dutch bicycle. I don't see a reason for having that ball-crushing crossbar between the legs that makes it hard to get into the saddle.
