  1. !vgp I worry about Nintendo's increasing lack of imagination when it comes to their prime franchises...

    1. @pawnheart /Increasing/? I don't see that it's gotten any worse lately. It's been awful for years.

      1. @ceruleanspark Yeah, but... Super Mario Galaxy 2? Mario Land 3D? A virtually unaltered remake of Zelda: OOT, and now Link to the Past? That overpriced box set of Mario Allstars? When they make Sega look good, bloody hell...

        1. @pawnheart Well, they tried to innovate a little in Pokemon B/W but they're awful.

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 10:58:25 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
          1. @ceruleanspark both the innovation and the low quality may be due to the fact that they didn't develop it themselves. I haven't played it though... in fact I haven't played a pokemon game since 'Red'. Seriously. I iz gaming fogey.

            1. @pawnheart Aside from Gen 5 which is about as entertaining to play as watching another mans ejaculate dry on the face of your girlfriend, the other 4 generations of pokemon games are fun. The fact that the GBA games still sell in sufficient volume to retail at full price says a lot.

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:05:48 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
              1. @ceruleanspark I have also got fed up of waiting for New Super Mario Bros DS to come down in price... it hasn't done so in about 5 years. And it is excellent. If a touch... tried and tested.

        2. @pawnheart I think that while there's hardly originality packing old content, prettied up or not, it also means they know to stick with the things they were famous for (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) This being said, I think they need to combine both methods and keep what gameplay worked for old games and use it to build NEW content instead of repackaging it.

        3. @pawnheart Also, you underestimate the amount of work they did prettying up OOT and adding depth and motion control to it. Also? 13 years is an acceptable amount of time to wait before remaking a game.

          1. @ceruleanspark Thats true. But it is another remake nonetheless... I spose thats what everypony's doing nowadays though. Maybe its unfair of me to dump it at Nintendo's door...

            1. @pawnheart Yeah I call it the Renaissance era of video games. Half the games are just remakes to some extent of another. Just look how well the market for "classic" games are. PSN, XBLA, WiiWare, they all are largely based on selling old games (granteed XBLA is only partially as used for classics)

              1. @fallinwinter Do I need to remind someone of Duke Nukem Forever ?

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:08:31 UTC from web
                1. @critialcloudkicker That's less of a remake and more of a sequel far too past it's expiration date.

                  1. @fallinwinter ... You sure ? ... Lets make bad phuns of 2006 games while actually looking like a 2006 game and price it as a 2011 game... It kinda crossed too many bad lines IMHO. Including the "lets only carry 2 weapons" bad part and the "long unnessesary shoot stuff with a large turret for way too long"... oh and the "miniature road rally" thing

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:20:58 UTC from web
                    1. @critialcloudkicker Oh, don't get me wrong! I despise the game as far as video's let me get without actually having to play that. But I'm just saying that it's not really a remake of say the original Duke Nukem and just a sequel gone really really bad with a side order of nostalgia and hype let down.

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:23:07 UTC from web
                      1. @fallinwinter Oh that I can get behind... Still due to all the nostalgia and hype let down it feels like a really bad uninspiring "lets mash some rocks together" game which is just as bad as ... lets say StarFox 64 3DS game on which you turned the 3D effects off on the 3DS because it gives you a headace

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:25:54 UTC from web
                        1. @critialcloudkicker I have a 3DS for one reason and one reason only. While the actual 3D may be a gimmick (that is far too hard to use while playing) it also means that the system needed better graphic capability regardless and that means better graphics in games. Other than that, I'm just waiting till games that aren't ports or remakes to show up (Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion 2...)

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:31:31 UTC from web
                          1. @fallinwinter Hmm, when I finally have an android telephone I am sure I'll be playing a whole lot of SNES games and stuff, cut out the middle man, you dont need a state of the art gaming machine to handheld play the games you used to play while sitting comfortable on your couch. Something which I can still do BTW, just look on my attic, LOADS of games. Just my 2 cents. Eventually ( I hope ) bad ports and remakes will stop and I'll get to see a console worth buying

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:36:59 UTC from web
                            1. @critialcloudkicker While I don't mind a good remake or two and giving people a back library of games to relive nostalgia in an easier to find format, It would be nice to get more than a few games that are actual new IPs and not sequels or games that are carbon copies of one or two different games mashed together. Not to say that there aren't original games or good sequels and series, but perhaps it's a sign when saying a game is "Innovative" doesn't necessarily come down to being it's own IP

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:42:24 UTC from web
            2. @pawnheart Plus... can't argue with OOT being a quality piece of work. And if they DO remake Link to the Past... I will want it.

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:06:27 UTC from web
              1. @pawnheart I liked OOT, but what did kind of put me off a bit was that they had practically forgone most of the sound mixing. I wasn't really expecting to hear Malon's Song still sound like it was made in Mario Paint.

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:07:49 UTC from web
                1. @fallinwinter Yeah, the fact that they actually launched the game with a download of a remastered soundtrack but then didn't use that soundtrack in the game baffles me.

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:09:35 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                  1. @ceruleanspark Q.Q Couldn't they afford a singer to redo LonLon Ranch's theme? I just checked the sound track and it still sound like mario paint singer.

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:13:35 UTC from web
                2. @fallinwinter Yeah, I've heard that complaint from a few folk... it was odd, considering the aesthetic tweaks the game had. I mean, the sound chip for the N64 already sounded dated when the original game came out. Maybe the remake was rush-released?

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:12:51 UTC from web
                  1. @pawnheart Speaking of games, I suppose we were going to have a chat about mine?

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:16:40 UTC from web
                    1. @fallinwinter Well, I really wanted to know how much of the game was firmly in the KH canon, and which elements were your own creation? I loved the atmosphere, and the concept of the two figures "playing" with other creatures, in some form of never-ending wargame...

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:19:20 UTC from web
                      1. @pawnheart Well it was basically merging the "Canon" of Kingdom Hearts with the anime Umineko no Naku Koro ni (which also made it linked to Higurashi as well)

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:21:10 UTC from web
                        1. @fallinwinter Ahh... Sadly, I also no nothing of that anime... still, it seemed very conceptually cool to me! Where does the 'heartless' concept come from, then?

Thursday, 13-Oct-11 11:24:21 UTC from web
                          1. @pawnheart Heartless, nobodies, keyblades, lots of the talk about the heart comes from Kingdom Hearts canon and is a large part of it's story. The rest comes from "Umineko" and brought the concepts of the Witches Game and their on going battle which is touched on moderately and is a fairly large part of it's story. The whole worlds thing is just a really convenient concept that happens to occur in both "canon" of the show (albeit in slightly different ways)
