about 6 months ago from web
    • @scribus Unity is in the red for years and buying Weta wasn't cheap so they were grasping for the most stupid decision to gain (repeatable) revenue by choosing to get paid by the amount of installs of the games. The problem is that indie game developers have very little profit and it can cost more in the long run than it gained profit. Also the way to determine the amount of installs is not clear. The last information I heard was that Unity wanted to use a heuristic to guess the amount of installs. Also Unity did that decision out of nowhere and tried to cover their tracks by sneakily removing paragraphs in their license that would hinder that license change. Unity had image problems (being used for asset-flip games, taking a lot of time for updates and being behind on the technical side) before but that was a huge kick in the balls to devs and all people who bought games made with Unity.

    • @adiwan their president also sold 2000 shares just before the install thing was announced, adding up to about 50k in the preceding year. seems bad

    • @zeldatra Him being at EA before that goes great with that... I read that that amount of stocks was only a very small percentage of his stock holdings. Still looks scummy.

            • I spoiled myself with a game treat and bought the game Tunic. It's a fine game. It is a cross between Zelda and Dark Souls. I had quite some fun but oh boy it is hard. Thankfully there is an accessibility option to make it easy. I used it only two times because my thumbs were already hurting enough and I didn't want to start a boss fight 100 times over. It is best to get into the game blind. I do admit that I looked up stuff at the end of the game because the puzzles to get the true ending are hard as heck and I have a life beyond that game.

                        • @scribus Purchasing it used might be an option. On ebay in Germany the prices are between 30€ and 40€. I guess it won't be cheaper anytime soon. Pokemon Snap for the N64 is cheaper as a cart only offer but complete in box it's still at original retail prices.

                        • Children. Having children is the breaking point of every Sims game. It takes two godrotten hours for them to put the little wantwit on the potty chair, by which time they're sitting in a soiled diaper. You tell them to potty train when it's halfway full, you sit for three hours waiting. You wait for yellow (not even orange or red) on the meter, and it's already too late. Sims potty training is like trying to catch a pear ripe. It may happen, yeah, but it's 100% luck. !vgp

                                  • @zeldatra Even after all of the updates and finally putting pools into the base game, I just cannot stand Sims 4. They're too dumb, and they're too bad at listening to the User. The multitasking is cool, and they don't clutter at stairs and doorways as badly as 3, but really.... That's about it, gameplay-wise, for me. Otherwise it's like they traded one graphical step forward for two or three game steps back. I hire a babysitter, I go to the bar with my wife, I come home at 3 AM and the toddler is unfed in the backyard playing around in a dirty diaper and that was about when I decided the game was literally unfinished and in Cimmeria, by Crom, pushing unfinished software to market would cost one's HEAD!! lol

                                  • @scribus I should probably mention that The Sims 2 runs on a pretty much identical game engine to The Sims 3, with the big differences being that create-a-sim is more detailed in 3 and, of course, the interconnected neighborhood with no load screens. If you’re used to 3’s clutter it’s PROBABLY the better game, I’m just not.

Nothing happens, she just sprints into her next cutscene to prevent you from impeding her any further. And then she still claims to have gotten the jump on you.

                                    • @zeldatra Borderlands II. A bad case of "You need to kill the boss before he pushes the doomsday button!" And then you kill them, with an acid rocket to the nards, all the way across the arena... and wait for a monologue, and a dead guy to push the cussing button anyway. It got to where I wasn't invested in the story missions because I knew nothing I accomplished would accomplish anything. !vgp # maybe?

                                    • @scribus This is why I always enjoyed the mostly-unscripted nature of the later Fallouts & Elder Scrolls. New Vegas particularly introduces you to a major antagonist (or ally, if you choose to go that route...) fairly early on, while you’re on your way to a story quest, and you can just let him do his thing, or, if you have the firepower, you can just FrankerZin shoot him and he won’t appear again for the rest of the game. (And then you can shoot his replacement later, too!)

That, or the keyboard-as-controller issues of "I wanted my knife, not to throw a grenade at my own feet..." !vgp

                                      • @scribus True story: I grew up pretty much entirely on PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, so when I finally got a PC that could properly handle video games I was immediately put off by the keyboard controls and plugged in an Xbox One controller instead. To this day it's really hard for me to play shooters the "real" way.

                                      • @mrmattimation I had had an NES, GameBoy, SNES, Atari XE, and Sega Genesis before we got our first "real" family computer, a 486 running Windows 3.11. My parents declared that the computer was therefore not for games, unless they were educational. I believe I would go on to N64, 3DS, and Xbox 360 before trying WASD-anything.
