  1. @cabal @purpletinker Are you going to black out the website on Jan 18?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:07:12 UTC from web
    1. @the20percent As far as I am aware it is business as usual

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:07:40 UTC from web
    2. @the20percent The site isn't going to go down in protest, sorry.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:08:13 UTC from web
      1. @redenchilada crap

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:08:33 UTC from web
        1. @the20percent What's wrong with it? I see no point to take down a means of communication just because a bill in Congress upsets you. Besides, a good chunk of us are outside the US.

          1. @redenchilada true enough... I must have spent too much time on reddit then :/

        1. @the20percent I heard something with blocking RDN?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:10:16 UTC from web
          1. @lyokotravels Oh, no... There's gonna be a massive internet protest going on on the 18th... Wikipedia and a bunch of other websites are gonna go down for 12 hours that day to protest SOPA and PIPA

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:11:24 UTC from web
            1. @the20percent ahh. ok ... STOP SOPA & PIPA !!

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:13:20 UTC from web
          2. @lyokotravels There's a lot of sights going dark to protest SOPA. Good idea, but more likely to inconvenience a ton of people than anything else. The 18th is most likely going to be a pain in the flank than anything.

      1. @redenchilada I MUST SEE THIS

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:13:39 UTC from web
    5. @thatonepony I revoke one internet from you

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:12:15 UTC from web
    6. @the20percent Interesting proposal. I have been following the discussion at Wikipedia's blackout proposal (FYI it passed!) and it might be a great idea to show solidarity with them, Reddit, and other websites planning to go dark on the 18 of January to oppose SOPA and PIPA. I would be willing to do it if @purpletinker does not object.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:29:56 UTC from web
      1. @cabal Look, I know you want to protest, but... no. It's a dumb idea.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:30:53 UTC from web
        1. @redenchilada Why is it dumb?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:33:03 UTC from web
          1. @cabal He said that because there's a lot of people outside the US, and also that we shouldn't shut down a means of communication just to oppose a bill, at least that's what he told me earlier :/

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:34:42 UTC from web
          2. @cabal Because you're responding to a censorship bill by denying service to your members.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:34:53 UTC from web
            1. @redenchilada @the20percent I don't think you guys understand what would happen if these bills were passed. For one thing, the US plays host to web services that are used internationally, this law will affect internet users worldwide through the DNS ecosystem. Second, the proposed law potentially violates the First amendment of the US Constitution: Government has no right to enforce rules about what we can read or say. Third, the bill has no provisions whatsoever for a dispute process. For example, if somebody here uploaded a PDF document about how a proprietary process works (making real live talking ponies as a humorous example), the company who owns a copyright to that leaked document may ask a US court to have our Domain and service blocked to users in the united states (we are hosted in Germany. Neener neener! Take away our domain, but still accessible by IP address). Fourth, the bill overreaches other countries' sovereignty. Five, section 8 of our TOS. Says I can remove access.

              1. @cabal I understand what will happen. I also know that protesting like that doesn't do anyone any good.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 02:57:56 UTC from web
                1. @redenchilada So, I suppose simulating what will happen if the bill passes to make users aware won't anyone any good?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:00:32 UTC from web
                  1. @cabal Now you're getting it.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:01:15 UTC from web
                    1. @redenchilada How would you feel if you woke up one morning to find that the site redirects you to some government "OOPS" site?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:03:15 UTC from web
                      1. @cabal That's besides the point. You're against the bill because it would hinder access to this site, so _why are you protesting by removing access to this site?_

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:04:53 UTC from web
                        1. @redenchilada Answer my question.

                          1. @cabal Ok, fine. I would be upset. What are you trying to prove with this?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:06:53 UTC from web
                            1. @redenchilada Now, what would you do if rdn never came back? I have no control over the situation? Do you think the Gov will go "Oh, I'm sorry your upset, but corporation ABC says that that site is devoted to piracy"?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:12:14 UTC from web
                              1. @cabal I'd move on. I can live without this site if I have to. Now quit using scare tactics and come up with an actual argument.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:14:04 UTC from web
                                1. @redenchilada Alrighty, under the terms of section 8. I hereby partially remove your access to RDN for one month with no explanation, No appeals, No work arounds, no information, no nothing. #

                                  3. @cabal I say bring it up to a vote. Tommorrow, have some sort of poll, and ask purpletinker. See what they have to say. If the majority are in support of the blackout, then blackout it is. If the majority of the people are against it, then no blackout. What do you think?

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:22:09 UTC from web
                                    1. @the20percent another possibility is instead of the full 12 hours of blackout like other sites, how about a partial blackout, like 6, or 4 or 3, 2 hours

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:23:30 UTC from web
                                    2. @the20percent Given that internet polls are subject to ballot stuffing and my lousy coding abilities (i'm a hardware tech, not a programmer) I don't think that it is feasible.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:26:18 UTC from web
                              2. Ok, let me try to reword my stance on this argument. I'm against SOPA as much as you guys. I just think the protesting is a dumb idea.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:17:22 UTC from web
                                1. @redenchilada I am for protesting, but I'm not going to shut down a social website just to make everyone else protest.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:19:19 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                                2. @redenchilada You probably spend a lot of time on the internet. How many people don't use the internet compulsively? How many times has it aired on the news? How many? Not many. Most people don't know about this, so this is why people need to raise awareness any way how. How? Lots of people go on wikipedia every day, facebook, etc., they may not know much before the blackout, but once they experience the inconveniences of the internet without their favorite corners, then that's it. they're against it.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:20:24 UTC from web
                        2. @redenchilada it would show people what it would be like to remove access to a website, before it becomes a permanent thing, and when we have bit of time to stop the bill, and makes it a personal change. Its to show you how inconvenient life will be, so you'll be personally motivated to stop it

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:06:32 UTC from web
                          1. @the20percent The problem, though, is that most of us already understand the implication the bill will have, if it gets passed. I still don't see the point.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:08:09 UTC from web
                            1. @redenchilada some people still don't, actually... and also, most people aren't motivated to stop it.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:09:39 UTC from web
                              1. @the20percent The government doesn't need additional motivation to stop it. They've got legions screaming at their doors already. It won't pass, I guarantee, and if it somehow does it'll be because it was cut down to the point where it doesn't actually affect anyone.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:11:32 UTC from web
                                1. @redenchilada Hells, just tell congress that Obama wants it to pass, it'll vanish without a ripple.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:12:31 UTC from web
                                2. @redenchilada Well, Idk about that, because technically a bunch of average joes can't hire lobbyists, you know.. "If people were against SOPA, why don't they just hire lobbyists?"

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:16:17 UTC from web
                  2. @cabal The problem with a protest like that is that the ones that need to actually see it don't usually bother visiting websites.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:02:05 UTC from web
                  3. @cabal Well technically yes it would not help. It seems kind of backwards to show your disapproval by doing exactly what the bill intends to do angering those who may use it.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:03:24 UTC from web
                    1. @pumpkinhill thus, to prevent it from happening, it would instill you to call your senator and house rep (or if you are outside the country, petition the US Dept of State) to prevent something like this from happening for real.

Tuesday, 17-Jan-12 03:05:39 UTC from web
                      1. @cabal If they're not sensible enough to realize the direness of the situation without resorting to extreme measure such as shutting down a site, why would you believe they're going to be sensible enough to call or write to the people who matter instead of just complaining to you for shutting it down.

                            1. @redenchilada perhaps they won't call in SWAT, but they will sieze this domain if it is hosted in the US, or it will block access to this site.
