@greydragon412 Nonononono. Linux is an Operating System, yes, but it's definitely not Windows.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:36:35 UTC from Choqok-
@omni Linux is a kernel around which Operating Systems can be built.

@greydragon412 ohhh okay thanks bro
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:40:06 UTC from StatusNet iPhone -
@greydragon412 I guess "it's like Windows but not Windows" works :P There are enough differences, but most can't be seen by non-techy people :P
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:42:33 UTC from Choqok-
@omni "It's like Windows but not Windows" is perhaps the best summary of Ubuntu one could ever hope to come up with.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:43:22 UTC from web -
@omni It's like Windows, but it doesn't run the programs you buy in stores!

@redenchilada True. Instead, it will run the stuff you download for free. Look at how I just saved 200 Euro because it came with LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office :P
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:45:19 UTC from Choqok-
@omni Except Windows does too! I can run OpenOffice.org on my Win 7 laptop just fine.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:46:57 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Well, true, but... [insert flawed argument here]
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:47:43 UTC from Choqok-
@omni My reasons for not using Windows or Mac are fairly simple. I don't want to give money to Microsoft or Apple, and I don't want to pirate software. That I happen to agree with the aims of the Free Software movement factor in at a distant third, as I can't claim to be uncompromising in pursuit of that particular goal. Find the flaws in that argument :P
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:50:56 UTC from web -
@omni And thus is why I stick with Windows. I haven't seen a convincing argument yet other than "Windows costs money" (and any computer I get has Windows pre-installed anyway!)
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:51:23 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I build my own computers, so they never come pre-installed with anything.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:52:38 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I suppose that's the difference between the two of us, then. I don't build my own computers.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:53:36 UTC from web-
@redenchilada It's a LOT easier than it sounds, really. You get more bang for your buck too, since you can pick out the best parts at the best prices.

@greydragon412 @redenchilada I have a thousand arguments, but I do need to know what you like/dislike about Windows to be able to know which ones of that are even interesting to you. The ability to build your own kernel, for example, if of great interest to some but little interest to most.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:53:06 UTC from Choqok-
@omni I like Windows because 95% of the programs I use are Windows-only. It's as simple as that.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:54:17 UTC from web-
@redenchilada 95% of the programs you use must be video games and Photoshop then.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:55:22 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel Yes, I play a lot of videogames on my computer. And I use Flash!
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:56:21 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I use Flash too.

@omni And before you suggest it (because I've had it suggested to me before), "use different programs" isn't an option for me. And I've heard too many stories of WINE not supporting certain programs for that to work, either.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:55:43 UTC from web-
@redenchilada WINE operates a website called the appdb where you can see exactly which programs work how well in it. You don't have to rely on random stories you might hear for that.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:56:45 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I've checked. A lot of my programs are stated as choking completely under it.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:57:58 UTC from web-
@redenchilada In that case I guess you have no choice but to stay with Windows. There still are those cases, yes, for example if you heavily depend upon Silverlight-based applications. Well, perhaps you can give it a try later as a personal OS or if you would no longer need those applications? *hugs* Hope I don't sound rude or forceful, I merely never regretted switching and truly believe others would like it as well (already succesfully converted a few people).
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:59:54 UTC from Choqok-
@omni *shrug* Hey, I try to keep a LiveCD around in cases where Windows won't run, so I at least get some use out of it. (Personally, I was hoping someone would suggest dual-booting. I already had my counter-argument planned! :c)

@omni €200 for Office? Lol.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:48:29 UTC from web-
@nerthos Sorry, my bad. 199 Euro for Microsoft Word. At least, that's what they asked for it on the official Microsoft site last time I checked.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:49:32 UTC from Choqok-
@omni Lol. with €200 I can buy anothr GPU.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:50:34 UTC from web-
@nerthos I think the price is sickening as well. It's a good thing Microsoft doesn't have complete power anymore, otherwise it would be even higher.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:52:00 UTC from Choqok-
@omni Lol, I never spent money on windows. And I çuse it since 1997.

@greydragon412 A) Using Wubi, installing Ubuntu requires about 5 clicks and 10 minutes of letting it run in the background on a decent connection, B) I had no interest until I gave in and tried it, but never want back, C) KDE has a similar layout to Windows, don't forget you can style Linux exactly as you want, D) Define "a lot of stuff", it's too vague to really know how to respond to that.
Tuesday, 20-Mar-12 15:57:01 UTC from Choqok -
@greydragon412 A) You're losing way more than the 10 minutes of installing it once with system maintenance (which Windows needs in case you want it to stay quick), B) I'm sorry, but that is literally unfair, as you were using @omni to directly conversate with me and I'm not allowed to give counterarguments? That does not make sense. Also, if you must know, I got a "get started with Linux in 5 minutes" book that came with a SUSE Linux 9.1 Live CD), C) By merely choosing KDE it looks like it. It's changing from "Ubuntu" to "Kubuntu" in the installer. It barely even counts as spending time on styling, D) Still vague, but okay, if you believe Windows is truly the best choice for you without giving the competition a chance then that is your decision and I wish you the best with using the Operating System you prefer.
