    2. @doates I am just one happy-go-lucky pony that gets yelled at every day by people calling in complaining that their Internet isn't working... then become apologetic when its fixed. Especially if its a Ethernet light issue on the modem. :P

      1. @cabal Any tips on explaining to my grandpa why when the internet itself is down it won't help to show him how to use Grandma's computer instead? :p

        1. @scribus It does not hurt to call the ISP. We also troubleshoot Sync No Surf issues. (IE, there is a connection, but computer isn't cooperating).

          2. @cabal I think I confuse the tech guys at my ISP since, on the few times I've had to call them, I'm nice to them and thank them for their help.

      2. @cabal I find the problem with informally helping people fix their machines is that you immediately become the point of blame for _anything_ that goes wrong afterwards ("IT WASN'T LIKE THAT BEFORE YOU MESSED WITH IT"). Out of curiosity, would you say that's more or less prevalent in professional tech support?

        1. @bitshift Worst thing is when someone who's supposedly a technician messes things. Like when my best friend computer got blocked because her retarded mother put a password on it and forgot. She payed an even more retarded guy, who instead of just deleting the password removed XP, installed 7, and deleted half the information stored in the PC.

        2. @bitshift I am a Data Technician Tier 1 for an ISP. I deal with issues that usually come about when the computer isn't sending or receiving data (internet). The majority of my calls are: A) old people/newcustomers not understanding something with thier setup B) Missing profiles in the DSLAM or BGP. C) Angry Customers babbling about something another Data Tech/Field Tech/supervisor/other department did that made issue worse or did not fix issue. D) Computer issues (not allowed to fix the computer, offer them PC Tech for $x amount per month). C) Misdirected telephone issues. -- It's a great start. I just hope at this point I actually get hired on and not remain a contractor, then truly my career begins. Education starts here with A+ certification: http://Comptia.org
