  1. I mean I'm stopping the crusade against people who want to join SBN, but it most certainly is not more active than this place.

    1. @redenchilada I'm surprised! i thought you hated it nearly as much as i hate Skype.

      1. @pony I still hate the place. I'm just tired of whining about it all the time.

        1. @redenchilada ah okay then. All is right in the world

      2. @pony but alas poor yovick. Skype is a great web video chat program between rolls of jelly.

        1. @firestormdangerdash Skype's not that great. The only reason why I use it is because nobody I know uses google hangouts.

    2. @redenchilada What's wrong with SBN? I thought that it is better to have more instances of GNU Social / Status.Net than less.

      1. @xrevan86 Cerulean and I have a grudge against the place. I can't say what his reasons are, but mine:

-The site originally started out as a place for me to test the edits I was making to the shiny theme for this site, but it eventually devolved into a place that seems to pride itself on being "RDN, but for horse porn"
-Their userbase is composed entirely of members and former members from here who use it entirely for either the above or to complain about us behind our backs (instead of telling us up front so we can improve things)
-They (and RDN, too) have a heavy focus on the public timeline and intra-site communication, so the typical benefits of StatusNet (distributed social networking) don't come into play, leaving them just a small offshoot community leeching off of ours
-They're incredibly shut in, to the point where they have a secret password for registration that literally nobody knows
-General rivalry between the sites that extends back to when they first opened

        [/rant]

        1. @redenchilada I think 90% of that is in your head. The general topis of discussion are far from horse porn.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:16:25 UTC from web
              1. @pony I'm usually the one to bring it up honestly, and I do it there because it's not allowed here for obvious reasons. That combined with the relative lesser activity means that the topic appears sometimes to be frequent

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:25:14 UTC from web
        3. @redenchilada Oh, I see; place seems dead though. Also RDN is indeed quite isolated, even absurdly and from both "sides" (I didn't notice any RDN group in fediverse list like steam or fimfans).

          Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:14:11 UTC from loadaverage.org
          1. @xrevan86 Yeah, and it's rather unfortunate that it is. I think the issue comes from the fact that RDN isn't projected as "a StatusNet node", but rather at its own thing, targeted to a fandom where 90% of the people who come across it won't know the first thing about the whole StatusNet project. There's a big focus on the public timeline instead of any personal timelines, for the sake of meeting new people and being centralized as a community site, but it does limit the usefulness of federation. I'm trying to make tweaks to the site so that we can have the best of both worlds (showing remote subscriptions for a user on the public timeline), but most of the isolation is going to be unfixable since most people who use the site don't know anything about the fediverse and won't care enough to look into it. :/

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:21:52 UTC from web
            1. @redenchilada i need to delve into the Statusnet project more. I had a passing interest on it thanks to coming here.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:24:21 UTC from web
              1. @awlderpy Yeah, my being involved in this place was what led me to look into the whole StatusNet agenda. It's highly interesting to me. I've considered setting up my own small instance for the purpose of having communication with the greater fediverse.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:28:52 UTC from web
                1. @redenchilada Is the fediverse a universe filled only with fedoras?

                    Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:32:11 UTC from loadaverage.org
                  2. the term !fediverse refers to "all social media # and their members that can directly talk to each other via federation #" (from: group description)

            2. @redenchilada ooh remote subs on public. I like that

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:24:51 UTC from web
              1. @redenchilada.. but will that include SBN? also, can we get sandboxed subscriptions on public maybe, like EqD?

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:26:25 UTC from web
                1. @pony Sandboxed subscriptions on public were planned to be a thing alongside remote subscriptions. SBN is /technically/ included in the remote subscriptions since it's the same as every remote site, I suppose...

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:30:03 UTC from web
                  1. @redenchilada then maybe my SBN account got blocked on RDN

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:31:57 UTC from web
                    1. @pony ...I haven't done it /yet/. It's something I'm /working/ on.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:33:27 UTC from web
                      1. @redenchilada oh sorry I got sidetracked. What I mean is that I see my SBN notices when logged in on RDN through Mustard, but I don't ever see them on my personal timeline on the web here.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:38:55 UTC from web
          2. @xrevan86 I do think, though (to toot my own horn a wee bit), that this place being as successful as it is is a good testament to how flexible StatusNet can be in its nature, serving as both a "decentralized Twitter" of sorts and as an independent community depending on the whims of the person setting it up. It'd be interesting to me to see more sites that use StatusNet for the kind of things we use it for, perhaps for different topics of discussion/fandoms/etc.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:27:51 UTC from web
            1. @redenchilada Can't disagree. Funniest thing about being isolated is that RDN is one of the biggest instances of GNU Social / Status.Net at all (probably even bigger that Quitter).

              Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:34:35 UTC from loadaverage.org
              1. @xrevan86 One of the biggest instances? That's... kind of sad. just kidding

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:42:00 UTC from web
              2. from the # of dents RDN (with its >3 mio dents) is before quitter (with 1.8 mio) and is topped by indy.im only (with 18.4 mio) http://federation.skilledtests.com/select_your_server.html

                Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 16:43:02 UTC from oracle.skilledtests.com
                1. @erkanyilmaz How old indy.im is? I ment not that kind of bigginess but popularity, # of dents per second :-).

                  Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 17:00:11 UTC from loadaverage.org
                  1. indy.im exists since # months (cc @boneidol@indy.im) for a # like "amount of dents per second" I'd correct by a factor the SN instances with #, forwarding

                    Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 18:53:28 UTC from oracle.skilledtests.com
        4. @redenchilada For what it's worth, the password is meant to make it an insular community these days precisely *because* we don't want to drain people from RDN with the whole "RDN without rules" image that's built up around SBN. It pretty much only continues to exist because there's a *very* small subset of former/current RDN users there who seem to prefer it for various reasons, and we'd rather not just take that away.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 17:04:15 UTC from web
          1. @redenchilada Well, that and inertia. As long as it's not doing harm, it's easier to just let it keep on running, really.

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 17:09:51 UTC from web
        5. @redenchilada Oh, and since I almost forgot, this is going in another dent: the point of the place *certainly* isn't to complain about this place behind its back, and I've tried to stamp that out whenever I catch it (though I've not seen it much recently anyway).

Tuesday, 26-Nov-13 17:12:44 UTC from web
          1. @bitshift @redenchilada s/dent/dash/, still too used to the rest of the fediverse, even after being away from much of it, sorry. xD
