    1. @sonorouscadenza Install Arch Linux or Gentoo. If you can take some stress, it will at least keep you busy for some hours. I wouldn't necessarily call it "fun" (even though installing Arch is fun for me), but it's better than crying (unless you don't really know a lot about computers, in which case the end result will probably be about the same).

      1. @omni >"I'm bored" >"INSTALL LINUX." You jerk.

        1. @redenchilada Last time I got bored I taught myself to lockpick. I think it was worth doing. Now life is like a puzzle game where the reward is other peoples property.

          1. @ceruleanspark Boy am I glad we live on different continents.

            1. @redenchilada but you aren't on a different continent from me I'm sure ;P

            2. @redenchilada American locks are actually easier to pick because fat incompetant americans inexplicably require wider keyholes than the superior european master race.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:16:45 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
              1. @ceruleanspark And then your house key snaps in the lock WHAT NOW

                1. @redenchilada I use my key extractor that I keep on my keychain with my pouch-o-picks. What do you guys do?

                  1. @ceruleanspark Force the door open.

                    1. @redenchilada Of course pig disgusting american resorts to brutality as always, whilst superior and suave european makes calm use of proper tools to achieve his goals.

        2. @redenchilada What? It kills boredom for me, I do it all the time when I'm bored, trying out different distros and the likes. Then again, "Install Linux" is my answer to pretty much everything.

          1. @omni Toaster jammed? Install Linux on it.

            1. @redenchilada Well, Arch can run on a kerosene-powered cheese grater, so why not: http://is.gd/g2hGxF

      2. @omni Tricking out vim for the first time is good fun for weeks.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:13:47 UTC from web
        1. @toksyuryel Ah, vim, I should try that once. I really got a ****storm over me from a Gentoo user when I said I used nano to edit files. The Ubuntu user that was standing next to us was like "vim? nano? What is that...". It's funny how many levels of Linux users there are.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:16:46 UTC from Choqok
          1. @omni Vim's not so bad once you conceptualise the idea of switching modes between editing and document operations.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:18:24 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
            1. @ceruleanspark Huh, I guess that sounds useful. I just wonder if learning vim is a good idea to do during my finales.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:22:09 UTC from Choqok
              1. @omni Learning Vim is like becoming a samurai. You can learn the basics in a few moments, but mastering it will take a lifetime.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:24:34 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
          2. @omni That's a strange reaction, considering nano is the standard editor on Gentoo.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:18:35 UTC from web
            1. @toksyuryel some people get all elitist if you use what comes with the actual OS. from what i've observed at least, because apparantly it defeats the point of linux which makes NO SENSE XD

Friday, 18-May-12 14:19:13 UTC from web
              1. @cavatina I guess they're still too used to windows where "what comes with the OS" is just all of Microsoft's terrible software (which includes the OS itself).

                1. @toksyuryel mwahahaha

Friday, 18-May-12 14:43:59 UTC from web
            2. @toksyuryel Well, I've got to admit to one of his points though: nano is less powerful than notepad.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:22:28 UTC from Choqok
              1. @omni Doesn't Nano have syntax hilighting?

Friday, 18-May-12 14:22:59 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                1. @ceruleanspark Mine doesn't, though that could be an issue with my terminal settings.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:24:33 UTC from Choqok
              2. @omni You clearly have not read the manpage. nano has quite a bit of hidden power. It's nothing close to the scale of vim or emacs, but it still blows notepad out of the water. The only thing I really hate about it is the stupid way it handles text wrapping.

Friday, 18-May-12 14:25:19 UTC from web
                1. @toksyuryel I honestly haven't, guess I should do that soon so I actually know what I'm talking about.

          3. @omni Some good advice for learning vim: http://yehudakatz.com/2010/07/29/everyone-who-tried-to-convince-me-to-use-vim-was-wrong/

            1. @toksyuryel that does look like good advice

              1. @pony My learning method was slightly stricter (I did choose to ban the arrow keys, simply because I knew I would never learn hjkl if I wasn't using it constantly from day one; but that's me), but the gist of it is the same- incrementally learn how to do it right, do it wrong in the meantime. Every couple weeks or so I learn or discover something vim can do that is immediately useful, and it replaces something I was doing wrong. Repetition is important for memorization (using Pentadactyl really helps with this part, btw), but only if you aren't trying to memorize a billion things all at once. The on-line help facility is great at helping you discover new things when you are reading to discover them.

                1. @toksyuryel sounds good to me! If I ever get back into programming maybe i'll give it a try

                  1. @pony I think it's effective for all forms of text editing, but to each their own ☺

    3. @sonorouscadenza Ah, Diablo 3, heard interesting things about it. The problem is that it's not my kind of game, but I wish you fun nonetheless.

    6. @widget That doesn't work quite so well for switching from insert mode to command mode, which is by far the most common mode switch that involves pressing <ESC>.

Saturday, 19-May-12 04:52:53 UTC from web
    7. @widget thats why

Saturday, 19-May-12 04:57:05 UTC from web
    8. @widget Suppose you want to actually *type* one of those into the document you're editing?

Saturday, 19-May-12 04:57:36 UTC from web
    9. @widget Yes but you have to have the cursor positioned already. The only one where it'll do the "find next" behavior is with quotes. But it does work for any kind of container symbol, and you can even do it with markup elements. Check out `:help object-select` for more.

Saturday, 19-May-12 05:02:15 UTC from web
    10. @widget You can turn off the text wrapping in nano by supplying the -w flag (or turning it off in your .nanorc), but then it just scrolls the text off the screen which makes editing long lines really frustrating. Not really an issue when coding but for other things it's a problem. nano also likes to add an extra newline at the bottom of every file that I could never figure out how to get rid of.
