While we're talking about Tomofachi life, am I the only one who DOESNT think that the exclusion of gay relationships was some malicious homophobic move on the part of the evil Nintendo corporation?

@mrmattimation I'm more offended that the given explanation was along the lines of "being gay is a bug" and that they patched to get rid of it rather than embrace it.

@thelastgherkin It was apparently a game-destroying bug.

@thelastgherkin Do more research, it was actually that people were using glitches to get male parts onto female miis to fake gay marriages being possible. Another large part of it was that when it was transferring miis from a Wii system it would occasionally screw up and assign incorrect genders to miis leading to a lot of confused players. It wasn't "Ugh no gay marriage!" it was "OK these are bugs and glitches"

@scoot I'm doing research, but a good chunk of it is all clouded in social justice and PR doublespeak, and evidently more information has come to light since I last read up on it. Overall, I think it's more of an issue with the legality, perception and near-fetishisation of homosexuality in Japanese culture.

@thelastgherkin I do not think this was in any way a political statement.

@scoot That's Nintendo of America's position; they weren't going to recode the game just to include same-sex marriage. It's Nintendo's Japanese developers I believe are in the wrong for not including it, but again, it's not like same-sex marriage is even legal in Japan anyway.

@thelastgherkin Well exactly, the place of origin doesn't allow for it so of course it's not in the game. I just don't appreciate claims that it was removed because Nintendo hates gay people or whatever else people were saying

@thelastgherkin I imagine it's Japanese Nintendo's fault in the sense that they're bound by their culture to think a certain way. It's possible they deliberately decided in the original development to oppress homosexuals across the world, but unlikely.

More likely they were like, 同性愛者の権利とは何ですか?

@mrmattimation I think Scoot and Sno are right that they just never thought about it that way.
