  1. I can respect the dedication of the players but in all honesty I personally find speedruns pretty boring. I probably wouldn't attempt one myself either, even if I could, because I'm one of those artsy fartsy nerds who values the experience of the game itself. Though I also realize that by saying that floodgates of debate could open, but it's just my thoughts anyway.

    2. @northernnarwhal I find that doing them for the games I have is really fun, games I've played through a ton already. The ones I did were SM64, Kirby's Dream Land and SMW

      1. @rarity That's totally understandable. I can see how others would like them too, I just never caught on with the appeal.

    3. @northernnarwhal They're pretty boring to me but I can appreciate and laugh at the absurd amount of time that goes into them

      1. @yodelerty Yeah, it is sort of funny to see how people go out of their way to exploit every aspect of the game to finish it as fast as possible.

        1. @northernnarwhal Even as to buying foreign versions of the game to make text sequences faster. Like, why

            1. @northernnarwhal I used to be really into it but I sort of stopped because I started playing games for story and stuff so it didn't matter to me

              1. @yodelerty As I mentioned in my post earlier, I'm generally sort of the pretentious artsy type who really values the actual experience. To me speedrunning a game would be like watching your favourite film in fast-forward.

                1. @northernnarwhal more or less, it's alright for platformers with no real story though

                  1. @yodelerty To be fair I don't think story is all there is to a game's experience. I feel like taking in a game's atmosphere and setting can provide just as much an experience. Hell, just look at at Journey.

                      1. @yodelerty It's a PS3 game wherein you play as a hooded figure and your goal is to reach this mountain in the distance. That's give or take it. It's an incredibly minimalistic game that,a s the title would imply, is more about the journey than the destination.

                          1. @yodelerty I really love it, it's one of my favourite games for sure. I have a soft spot for minimalism done really well in any medium.

                              1. @yodelerty Well this isn't to say that maximalism can't be great either, as I love a lot of works (games or otherwise) that would be classified as such. Just that I have particular fondness for minimalism in particular.

Wednesday, 21-Jan-15 05:00:20 UTC from web
                                1. @northernnarwhal What would be defined as maximalism? In terms of examples of games anyway.

Wednesday, 21-Jan-15 05:02:41 UTC from web
                                  1. @yodelerty Well, if we first look at maximalism from a wider artistic definition the first movements of maximalist art actually started in response to minimalism. So basically, if the inherent design philosophy of minimalistic works tends to be "less is more", in maximalism it would contrast this as "more is more". So basically, game that is very overt, excessive, saturated, or just incredibly detailed could be argued as maximalist. Perhaps a good example of a maximalist game (or series, rather) would be The Elder Scrolls. There is an excess of quantity and quality, an extensive of amount of features/mechanics, and an affirmative fondness of the concept of vastness in its worlds.
