  1. RDN, what's it like to be good at something?

    1. @tiffany I'm not going to tout myself as being particularly good at something, but I guess in terms of how I feel about being highly praised it's sort of a strange mix of emotions. On one hand it feels really great when you put lots of time and energy into something and you're acknowledged for it, because you get a really strong sense of effort justification. But also dedicating too much of yourself to something can really consume your identity, both in terms of your sense of self and public image. Also whenever someone praises me I feel sort of obligated to continue impressing them but at the same time I know at some point I'm going to make a mistake and there's nothing I can do about it, or that I just have to try even harder to maintain a reputation constructed beyond my own sense of agency.

        1. @coltz Thank you~ And really, pretty much everything I'm saying there just stems from personal experience so I'm just articulating it as best I can.

      2. @northernnarwhal Kind of like how I'm going insane putting in dictionary entries because I believe publishing things for the Maycan language will make any difference.

        1. @awlditzy Well, that isn't to say we shouldn't pursue our passions or put hard work and effort into the things we love. It's great to have something to work at, and having goals to set and meet helps facilitate growth as a person. The willingness to continue striving forward and trying our best part of what makes people so absolutely beautiful. It's just when you let your passion become your identity that things get more questionable. Do you do what you love because it's given you something to works towards, an avenue to grow as a person and connect with others? Or is it simply because you are that thing, you know nothing outside of it and can only get love, respect, and recognition because of it? The long and short of it is someone admiring you for your talents will never achieve the weight of someone loving and respecting you because of who you are simply as a human being.

            1. @awlditzy Well, that's how I feel about it anyway, you're welcome to disagree. I mean, I love being complemented as much as the next person, but someone saying "Tyler, you're a great person" has just so much more impact than someone saying "Tyler, you're a great drummer".

              1. @northernnarwhal I don't disagree. Saying the latter is pretty much saying the opposite of the former in my eyes.

                1. @awlditzy That's understandable.

                                          1. @northernnarwhal I stopped playing it many years ago, then when I got back into magic I saw some people playing Yugioh. I watched for about 3mins, then just walked away because it was boring to watch. every deck is basically a one-trick-pony now :L

                                            1. @polarbear Eh, I like Yugioh because it's accessible enough while also retaining enough depth in terms of its strategic composition (or at least it was!). MtG was just waaaay too expensive a hobby for me to seriously pick up (which, given that I collect vinyl records, sort of paints me as a massive hypocrite, doesn't it?).
