@abigpony G2 still had the crappy game mechanics of G1 though. The stuff that made no sense, all of which was fixed and improved upon in G3

@minti Nothing was fixed in G3 as much as them removing all the fun mechanics and restricting the game to Crapemon. G2 was fun as hell and G3 was so bad that it made me quit pokemon altogether.

@minti yeah, I kind of got really stuck up in my opinion there. G2>G1>G3=G5>G4. When Black and White 2 come out, are they gonna be a new gen or a continuation of the current one.

@abigpony G2 Pokemon is still my favourite era. I'll still happily play pretty much any era, but I much prefer G2.

@bitshift The only reason i can't go back and play pokemon is because it's too slow for me. The only way I would is if it is on the actual GB which I do not have anymore.

@toksyuryel I do wish it didn't have the unfortunate implications brought up by tying gender to IVs, though (mostly that only male/nongendered Pokemon can have maximum Attack).

@toksyuryel Actually, it was due to Gen. 1 (where genders weren't a thing) backwards compatibility; they had to encode it into something which would survive trading to/from G1, so Pokemon didn't change genders when trading between the two generations and back.

@abigpony Is it weird I liked the story more than the pokemon for G2? Team Rocket trying to reform, your rival's conflicted with what's he's learning with each defeat, you form a strong professional relationship with Lance, who then drops a knowledge bomb on you, getting to see how characters from the first game are holding up after the passage of time... yeah, G2 earns my wubs.

@abigpony G2's mixup to that premise is pretty cool though: in the first one you're all like, "okay so I'm doing this because everyone in town expects me to do it, and I'm restless apparently." In G2, Favors are asked of you and you learn the ropes to get the tasks done, and along the way you start seeing the world beyond your world out there. So your character kind of falls into wanting to continue his adventures. I never got that feel that he wanted to jump through his window first scene to start throwing down with preschoolers. G5 was the most blatant in this regard.

@crusader8 I really don't know exactly what you just said, but if anything, G5 would be among my favorites in terms of twisting the story. Any way I see it, though, it just boils down to the same game.

@minti to me they felt like they took the advancements from DPP and applied it to an aging game. Also, I tried to play DPP stuff after playing a boatload of the remake and I couldn't get into it. Didn't feel a whole lot like the Heartgold stuff. So maybe it's different for you because you may have played DPPt before the remakes?
