  1. Though ultimately it's very much worth putting on record (despite being pretty commonly accepted) that great gear will never, never create great art, great artists will create great art. The gear used is simply the set of tools used by the artist in their medium, and while obviously having a wider variety of tools will give you a greater creative liberty it will never compensate for the capacity to create a compelling piece of art. As a matter of fact, I can think of tons of albums I really love that I wouldn't say are very well engineered, and there's also lots of art in other mediums I've enjoyed greatly that I wouldn't say had top of the line production value. With that being said, I also think having an experienced understanding of both the craft and production of any given medium certainly allows you to appreciate more why you do and don't engage with particular works within that medium, as well as engage with general works more critically.

    1. @northernnarwhal Cory Spazkid has done work for television on a Wacom Intuos, equipment similar to what I used to animate until I got my Cintiq. The tools make things easier but ultimately your tools are only as good as you are.

      1. @mrmattimation Precisely, tools are only extensions of artistic initiative, not sources of it.

    2. @northernnarwhal So basically you're saying Team Art's gonna kick Team Science's butt, right?

    3. @northernnarwhal That's not to say it makes said engagement any more or less "valuable", just that it gives it greater detail beyond the superficial. No interpretation of any artistic work is inherently more or less meaningful than another, if anything our mileage with artistic interpretation parallels our mileage with art itself, the only way we draw value from either is from the manner in which the artist or interpreter chooses to convince us.
