  1. Hey D&D people, if a creature has an Armour Class of 20, how can you even hit it?

    1. @thelastgherkin Yes you can. Assuming you're playing a fighter with +3 strength at level 1 then you hit with a 17 on the d20. A natural 20 is always a hit even when you're playing a weak character against a terask you'll do some damage.

      1. @adiwan Makes sense! Thanks!

      2. @adiwan Wait, I have another question. If a monster has health of (1d4-1), if I roll a 1 for its HP, do I accidentally make a monster with 0 health?

        1. @thelastgherkin Technically yes. It depends on what you want to make out of this. If you have a mixed group of angry monsters you could have a fight between two groups and this is one of the dead. Otherwise I'd say it's a 1 hit kill.

          1. @adiwan @thelastgherkin I recall it being that the first hit die got max, so 1d4-1 would be 3 HP. BUT a pre-dead monster in the midst of an ongoing fit sounds fun, too

            1. @scribus In D&D 5e you can choose to roll each monster's HP or take the rounded-up expected value of a roll. 1d4-1 would be 2. E(1d4)=ROOF(1/4 * (1+2+3+4) = 3

              1. @adiwan That makes sense, too.

            2. @scribus @adiwan This example was a bird. You're attacked by a flock of birds! Three of them drop dead out of the sky

              1. @thelastgherkin It depends on the situation. If you roll 0 HP for a monster you can take it out of the fight. In this example you could take a bigger bird that attacked the flock and killed them beforehand, or a friendly ranger/hunter could have killed them.

        2. @thelastgherkin These monsters are considered as easy cannon fodder that drop when you look strange at them. I tried to look it up in the Dungeon Master's Guide but I don't see anything regarding this.

    2. @thelastgherkin your BaB may exceed 20; nat. 20 attack rolls always hit, critical or not; environmental hazards are also a good option; moves that target resistances or force the enemy into being flat-footed, prone or fall flat on his back; depending on your DM's rules flanking will remove, or decrease the Dodge component of it's AC.

      1. @zennx What's a BaB?

        1. @thelastgherkin Base Attack Bonus, it's the +X you add to your attack rolls
