@redenchilada Well, that's not _technically_ true. I used Puppy or something with a similar name off of a LiveCD to get some files off my old computer's hard drive when the OS blew up and needed a reformat. But that doesn't really count since I wasn't actually using the features for anything.

@renovatedkitchen Consoles have to be replaced, and backwards compatibility is solely at the discretion of the manufacturer. Meanwhile, becoming up-to-date in PC gaming is a matter of getting a new graphics card and maybe an upgraded processor, which combined are less than the cost of a new console. Don't get me wrong, both forms of gaming have their ups and downs, but console gaming isn't _cheaper_.

@redenchilada You would need to upgrade your ram, cpu isnt too important, but if you do, good luck putting an AM3+ CPU into a motherboard with a AM3 socket. New video cards are expensive. Console gaming is cheaper.

@renovatedkitchen Yeah ok I knew I was forgetting something. Still, a PC that's kept somewhat up-to-date is anywhere from a bit less to slightly more than a new console, and that's before considering that your computer also does computer-y things. Plus, like Toks said, the games are cheaper.

@renovatedkitchen Well yeah, of course most people have a computer. You still had to pay for it, whether or not you owned it before the console. If you're using your computer for gaming, then yeah, it probably cost slightly more than the console, but hey, you got a work machine at the same time.

@renovatedkitchen My point being -- cost for you to do work and gaming = cost of console + cost of laptop. Cost for a PC-only gamer to do work and gaming = cost of PC. So even if the PC cost more than your console, it probably didn't cost more than the two devices you need to get the same things done.

@renovatedkitchen Most modern PCs (or more precisely, the graphics cards inside them) output HDMI, same as the consoles. They could quite happily use the exact same screen that would be suitable for the console. And even if they didn't do that (because having two screens for two devices _is_ more convenient), monitors are not expensive. The prices are still going to be very close, even before you factor in the price difference between the average new PC release and the average new console release.

@widget You're kinda screwed on that front due to your nvidia card. If you had an ATI card it'd be a different situation. You will most likely have better results playing your games on Windows because of this.

@widget I never said it wouldn't *work*, but there's a world of difference between "work" and "work well". Until nvidia opens up their hardware specs the way ATI did, their cards will never work as well.
