      1. @abigpony Never claimed that, and I only post facts. It's not my fault Linux has better out-of-the-box support for old hardware due to drivers being in the kernel (at the possible cost of new hardware not working out-of-the-box until a new kernel update if it doesn't use a standardized protocol). Not putting drivers in the kernel (like Windows does) has good sides as well, though (like a smaller kernel size and possibly cleaner code). I just prefer having drivers in the kernel, so stuff works out-of-the-box, instead of having a smaller kernel.

        1. @omni This ain't popcorn, man. I know nothing about any other kinds of kernals. I know quite a bit about the popcorn ones on the other hand.

          1. @abigpony And this, in my view, is exactly why OS wars get out of hand: people without specific knowledge about the operating systems being discussed join in and start to spread wrong facts and cause anger on both sides (which is why, for example, I never join in in an OS X-related discussion as I know near-nothing about that OS). Well, just eat your popcorn, popcorn is nice (haven't eaten that in too long, actually, should eat it some time soon again). Also, this post is meant to be read with no anger in it, emotions never really translate well over the Internet, which is another reason many discussions get out of hand.

        2. @omni You can have it both ways if you build your own kernel, since you only have to build the drivers you actually need.

          1. @toksyuryel I'm aware of this kernel-building thing, but I have not seen a real reason for that yet as the Arch Linux kernel never really disappointed me.

            1. @omni Gentoo expects you to do it, as they don't provide pre-built kernels.

              1. @toksyuryel Ow, well, that sucks :(

Tuesday, 31-Jul-12 07:25:10 UTC from MuSTArDroid
        3. @omni You could also build them as modules.

    4. @omni "Oh look, my nerd OS comes prepackaged with the specific drivers to run my specific device, it's so obviously superior."

      2. @redenchilada >Says "f u" as if I'm starting OS wars >Insults an OS without giving any good arguments (If you need Internet and Windows can't install the stick because it can't find drivers on Windows update, yes, Linux is being superior here. That doesn't mean it does every single thing better than Windows, though. You ought to stop trying to read between lines and finding "Windows can't do anything" when there is nothing between the lines.

        1. @omni I'm just sayin. Most products include drivers on a disc for a reason.

Tuesday, 31-Jul-12 07:26:48 UTC from web
          1. @redenchilada That reason is because they expect to be used with a windows system (and often it's also because they don't provide a standard interface- if they did, we wouldn't even *need* drivers for every manufacturer).

            1. @toksyuryel Hey, I'm all for standards and convenience as much as the next guy. I'm just saying don't dock the OS because the device won't play nice.

Tuesday, 31-Jul-12 19:33:48 UTC from MuSTArDroid
          1. @derpyshy It seems like almost every computer user likes to hear about Windows failing, even Windows users. It's strange how little Windows users actually like Windows.

            2. @omni yup :3 after I've heard you say how much Windows fails at everything, I can't use my laptop without thinking "Ugh, if this were Linux, it would work".

Tuesday, 31-Jul-12 20:05:51 UTC from MuSTArDroid
              1. @derpyshy Well, Linux won't magically fix everything, but from my experience I've had a lot less issues with Linux than I had with Windows (but perhaps it just likes me more).
