@scribus Oh man you're one of the dudes that do that?
-
@minti Yes, I am. Care to guess which one?
-
@scribus The one with the mug, you drunk.
-
@minti . . . yeah. XD
-
@scribus XD
-
@scribus Cool. It's fun how there's only one guy properly dressed for swordfighting, though xD
-
@nerthos The one in the chainmail?
-
@scribus Man, i want to try that. Looks like such fun. xD
-
@diamonddragon Whaat
-
@minti It is, if you can get a good group. :) You should look into it.
-
@scribus I have a bunch of friends who would probably enjoy it. I may look into it actually. Any resources?
-
@scribus Yeah, he has protection in both arms, for example.
-
@minti I found my group on Meetup.com. Um.... There are plenty of guides you can find on making weapons. I used to follow Amtgard rules for weaponsmithing, but then they got ridiculous. Here's a how-to from the semi-official "weaponsmaster" of our group: http://youtu.be/dc2b4nUZCvE
-
@nerthos I had bracers on both arms, they just don't really show. :p
-
@scribus Leather or steel? The only complicated thing about what you guys do is the whole latex/foam weapons. Instead of that I use wooden swords and more protection.
-
@nerthos Leather, but it's better than nothing. I almost bought a pair with large steel rings attached, but I was concerned about accidentally hitting someone in the face with them. And, yeah, it's more sport than training, so differences abound. Previously, it was me and one buddy with shinai (bamboo swords) and no armor at all. Those were fun times. XD
-
@scribus I mostly use steel plates as protection, since they're somewhat easy to shape and offer lots of protection. You have to be careful not to hit someone with an armored arm, yeah, but it's worth it.
-
@nerthos I think a main concern here is safety, and then affordability. In some LARPS, metal offers better bonuses for armor, but ours is simplified to keep it easy and to avoid anyone buying their way to victory.
-
@minti Also, more resources: calimacil.com for high-quality, not-cheap, pre-made weapons, and darkknightarmoury.com for where I got my meager armor.
-
-
@scribus Yeah, there's that problem too. If you're wearing full plate you can pretty much take any blow from a practice weapon. The costs part is relative, if you want to buy plate armor it becomes prohibitively expensibe, but if you make it yourself, it's probably cheaper than leather.
-
@nerthos *expensive
-
@nerthos Possibly. I would think that leather could be pricier to get, materials-wise, but easier to work, where steel would be cheaper to find but need better gear to work. But I've never tried either, so what the hell do I know? XD
-
@jla I'm not gonna even try and pretend we're not nerds, but we're slightly sportier than those guys. Mostly. Well, at least we like to think so.
sasha likes this. -
@scribus Which one is easier depends on your particular set of craft talents. I'd totally show up on a flarp wearing full black plate, with a black cloak on top of it, shield and **** sword. Whenever I go to your part of the world, I'll show you how to work steel.
-
@nerthos Why do you hate on one-and-half hand swords, wordfilter?
-
@nerthos The cost actuall is really relative if you think about how much a decent tent costs and how much a simple plate arour costs. The proble with heavy armour is that it can get really hot in there and that you need quite some timme to get into them. In addition, if you take LARP a bit seriously, you need someone to fix the damage to your armou after battles, so there isn't really a buying your way to victory. The easiest way to suceed is to get some people for a formation, learn decent sneaking or find a Master Mage who can support you...
-
@nerthos Was that supposed to be b-a-s-t-a-r-d sword? And is that really #wordfilter worthy? @widget
-
@nerthos It is a talent I would like to have, but the equipment prerequisite has thus far been prohibitive.
-
@scribus Yup. And I don't think so. It's not really an insult, since it just means "born out of a marriage"
-
@nerthos People use it like an insult - as if we still lived in a medievil society which cared about such stuff..
-
@widget Problem with that is, "Big" was PG and used the F-bomb.
-
@scribus Equipment-wise, you need a hammer, some pliers, that thing for pop rivets, something to cut metal sheets with, a file, and something to hammer things on, even a piece of train rail can work. (That is, for a set of armor for FLARP, not for real combat)
-
@widget The thing is, that word _could_ be used in a PG movie in that context. Just not when it's not before "sword". (Maybe you could make the regex something along those lines? I think that should be possible.)
-
@widget **** is used even in titles, so I think it's fine. In any movie set in the middle ages, you'll hear it at least once, regardless of classification.
-
@nerthos Hmm. Well, in my current situation, I couldn't pull it off, but it doesn't sound extraordinarily prohobitive....
-
@widget anecdotally, it was one of the words allowed through my schools wordfilter 'cause of Shakespeare and history. Of course, aside from this conversation and perhaps a discussion of the best early game greatsword class weapon in Dark Souls, it'll probably never come up in an "Innocent" context again.
-
@nerthos You also need a rasp so that the armour isn't edgy and thus dangerous for the other players.
-
@scribus Wait, that's stupid. You're stupid!
-
@hakupony That's what the file's for.
-
@scribus I would totally make you some basic pieces, but there's no way I could send them to you xD
-
@ceruleanspark On the other hand, the word filter is regex-based, so it should still be possible to match the word only when not followed by "sword". That'd be the best of both options if it actually is doable.
-
@nerthos I appreciate the thought, but I'd hate to put anyone out of their way for me. :)
-
@bitshift It could also can be used if we talked about any story in which succession is important...
-
@hakupony Yup, there's the heat problem. It's not something you can wear on a 35ºC day without training and being in good shape. If you need to buy it, then it's probably not worth it, but if you can make it, it's worth a try.
-
@scribus It wouldn't take me more than a day of work to make a chestpiece and bracers, so making it is not really a bother. But as I said, the problem is sending it, because the pieces are bulky and have a considerable weight.
-
@nerthos It's worth it because it also changes the way you feel and move. Clothing and armour has more benefits in LARP as just giving ou armour points, it helps greatly to get in your role (and to look like your character).
-
@nerthos Definitely. XD Also, I still feel a bit leery about metal LARP armor, out of consideration for others' foam weapons.
-
@scribus Nah, that's okay. Just don't have spikes and sharp edges and the weapons will be all right. I speak from experience :3
-
@jla Don't tell me that this is how Finnish LARPs usually look like...
-
@hakupony I would love to try some real LARP, but I haven't found a good group yet. There are great skill and strenght differences in most of the people who could play with me, so it wouldn't be fair. And there's also the point that all the number stuff would be bothersome in a live action enviorment. Since blows wouldn't actually deal any damage, I would just keep on fighting until exhausted.
-
@hakupony I don't doubt that, I mean I'll swing at metal armor with my weapons, but I'm a bit paranoid about hurting other people more than myself. /shrug
-
@scribus If it's not spiky, there shouldn't be a problem. It's just rigid. I wouldn't wear spiky/sharp armour to a LARP, though, since it could end very bad in case of cheating or a really tight fight with someone who takes the stuff seriously.
-
@nerthos This is why mot LARPs have rules. First, you have to play your wounds as well, second, there is only a certain amount of damage your character can take. I have the luxury that there are some great big events arount - I'm taling about thousands of players :)
-
@hakupony Dag, yo. Biggest thing my way is about 300 people, and it's once a year.
-
@hakupony That's an advantage of living where you do. Here it's a really strange thing. There's no tradition regarding that kind of things or anything. There's a middle ages fair on october 7, though, I'll try to attend.
-
@scribus 300 people is a good size for a Con, th bigger ones are a nice experience but I personally prefer middle size. But it is awesome to make the experience of one of the huge events: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jJJBsQPUkU&feature=related
-
@nerthos Yeah, I know. I don't know another countr where the hobby is so organized as here.
-
@hakupony No, it's a comedy sketch from a indie film series called Huba. Each film is a bunch of sketches basically and they are pretty funny if you are Finnish.
-
@jla Well, I don't speak the language so it is natural I don't get the joke :3
-
@hakupony Yes. :D
