  1. What's the difference between ponibooru and bronibooru? Other than the one's a lot better at tagging my images?

    1. @thegherkinprincess there's no difference?

    2. @thegherkinprincess Ponibooru seems to be more popular, beyond that I don't know.

    3. So does Octavia play the double bass or the cello? Looking at her instrument, it gets wider toward the bottom, which is indicative of the double bass. And if she plays the double bass, which is played on the bass clef, why is her cutie mark a treble clef?

    4. @petalbasedweaponry Yeah, me too. It looks like a double bass, but a lot of people don't know the difference between a double bass and a cello, so I'm thinking the animators may have went with a large stringed instrument and decided it was a cello.

    5. @petalbasedweaponry Isn't a cello played on the bass clef, too? I don't know. I play stand up bass and that's it. I really don't know anything about any other instruments.

      1. @engelhardt yes, cello is on bass clef :)

    6. @petalbasedweaponry I have a habit of writing jazz arranges of songs I like. This may happen with MLP.

    7. @engelhardt I'm a music geek, but my issue's more about how can she hold the bow or the strings with hooves?

    9. @petalbasedweaponry I can't think of any songs from MLP that would work in a jazz style. Most of them are too fast or poppy to work in jazz.

Thursday, 30-Jun-11 15:03:25 UTC from web
      1. @engelhardt too fast for jazz? a lot of the jazz I played was faster than the MLP songs :)

        1. @elind85 Yeah, I've heard some takes on Just one of Those Things that push like 180, but I like to write for jazz violin. You write for jazz violin too fast and it sounds like bluegrass.

          1. @engelhardt ha, 180 isn't even that fast, perhaps on a violen, i played saxophone for 10 yrs and much of the stuff we did was in the 220-320 range. Have you heard Kenny Garrett's "Song #" ?

    10. @zach121k I know a few violinists, I really like the instrument. I always liked getting violinist to play with my piano trio. Jazz violin has got to be my favourite style of music.

        1. @loak I have this weird habit of befriending violinists. I work in the music biz and have more violinist friends than I do guitarists or piano friends. I usually seem to get along with violinists.

    12. @zach121k I actually bought a violin. I was poking around some music stores, checking out basses. I think I want to upgrade to an Engelhardt ES1, but to my ears an EC1 (which I had to sell when I moved 'cause it wouldn't fit in my car, boo!) sounds just as good. One of the stores had a violin for $35. I was like 'Holy crap, a $35 violin, I MUST HAVE IT!', so I bought it. I'm used to bass prices, and the cheapest bass you'll find is $500, so seeing an instrument from the same family for $35 blew my mind, and I had to have it. I don't play it 'cause I make it sound bad and the treble clef is weird, but I have it.

      1. @engelhardt very cool. Have you ever played a Kay? The bass we had was very old and delicate but it sounded amazing and was very loud, we usually didn't need pickups when playing with jazz choirs.

    13. @petalbasedweaponry It's a really ugly, cheap made in China violin. It's the gaudiest colour of blue I've ever seen. I've taken some pictures of it, but haven't spent my roll of film, so I haven't gotten the negatives developed. If I remember this conversation when I do develop the negatives, I will post pics!

      1. @madflavors don't say that, anyone can learn, basic music theory is very simple actually

      2. @madflavors Music is a language, approach it like you're learning a new language. Pace yourself, and take it easy. At first, it is overwhelming, because when you listen to music, it's like hearing a conversation in a second language you're not very good at, but after a while, you'll start picking up more and more, you'll start hearing time sigs and tempos, then chord progressions, be able to name them, be able to pick up on the key, etcetera. It is a language, it takes a while to learn, but it is very doable.

    15. @zach121k Going from the bass clef to treble clef or vice versa is like going from shifting in left hand drive to shifting in right hand drive. Shifting with my right hand, easy peasy, shifting my left hand oh my god we're all going to die.

Thursday, 30-Jun-11 15:21:50 UTC from web
      1. @engelhardt Really? I've been playing the viola for five or so years, and I can play amazingly in both clefs.

    16. @zach121k im guessing if you read music then you play it as well?

Thursday, 30-Jun-11 15:22:40 UTC from web
    17. @petalbasedweaponry Yes! A horrible light blue, it's vile. I keep it in my closet so I don't have to see it. I could repaint it. I've painted a double bass before, and that's a lot more work than painting a violin.

      1. @emperormiloth yea i have a broken guitar. i tried learning how to play it 4 years ago. thats when i decided music wasn't for me

Thursday, 30-Jun-11 15:29:06 UTC from web
        1. @madflavors I used to think music wasn't for me, either. I thought 'Man, this is just something that's not in me', I was so wrong. Someone finally sat me down, and presented to me in a way I could understand, and I ran with it. I've only been reading for about four years, and playing for two, but now I can sight read, and write for four part harmony with any problems. If you really want to do it, you can do it. It's not easy, but it's not hard either, it's just a lot of work.

          1. @engelhardt thats why i have a huge respect for people who read and write music. Me? i'll just stick to basic wordplay. give me a blank sheet of paper and a pencil and i'll be happy
