  1. @pony WINE isn't native (well, WINE itself is, but it doesn't turn the executables into native executables).

    1. @omni yeah. I realized that after posting xP

    2. @omni is there any program that someone might want to run on Windows that doesn't have a native equivalent?

      1. @pony @omni from Linux I mean.. and not OSX

        1. I wish I could run !Gameloft games on my PC.

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 16:27:35 UTC from web
          1. @pony On Windows or Mac, that's possible: http://bluestacks.com/ (I think that's free as in beer, but not sure). On Linux, I would expect it to be possible (because we have parts of Android right in our kernel) but I haven't found a way yet.

              1. @pony I honestly don't care all that much, I wouldn't use the tool myself anyway, but too bad to hear that =/

              1. @omni You should as welln

                1. @zeldatra Click "in context" and read the discussion. @pony asked specifically for software native to Windows which you cannot run on Linux and which has no equivalents there.

                  1. @omni "Photoshop"? GIMP is not an equivalent, it's an alternative. :p As well as any of the Adobe Masters Suit really, I think.

                      1. @omni Oh, I missed a notice there. Heh, maybe *I* should check the context. XD

                    1. @zeldatra Okay, let's ask @pony because I really interpreted that as "Are there any things on Windows someone using Linux wouldn't be able to run and for which would be no equivalents?". So, @pony, what is it?

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 16:43:22 UTC from web
                      1. @omni Best bet: Answer both sides of the question! I think @zeldatra is correct, anyway. His and my interpretation of what @pony said is identical.

                        1. @minti I know so many great Linux utilities that aren't native to Windows, but I don't know the names of them, so that doesn't really help a lot =/

                          1. @omni Package managers are the huge one for me. :p

                              1. @omni *managers

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 16:50:00 UTC from web
                              2. @omni I know right. I love having anything maybe 20 keystrokes away, all packaged properly and ready to work on almost any system.

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 16:50:46 UTC from web
                                1. @minti @pony @omni Do they have to be GOOD replacements? Because Chocolatey (http://chocolatey.org/) is a package manager for Windows.

                                  2. @ceruleanspark ooh that's kinda nifty. too bad it sounds like it doesn't have a great reputaion

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 16:55:51 UTC from web
                                    1. @pony Also there's only 500 packages available through it, and it's probably easier to get up to date versions of them and install them yourself.

                                    1. @jla hmm.. 93 programs listed isn't many, though they are good ones and it does look decent other than being limited.

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 17:07:27 UTC from web
                                      1. @pony I think it's more intended for setting up a new PC with your everyday apps, rather than being a total replacement.

                                        1. @ceruleanspark That makes sense.

                                  4. @ceruleanspark There is a big problem with that, though: The databases will be limited and therefore it won't be able to keep everything up-to-date. Assuming you're running a decent Linux distribution, the repositories would be extremely big. I guess Windows 8 will fix this, though, assuming they actually get a big catalogue.
