"An unauthorized copy of proprietary software is bad, but less bad than an authorized copy" ~ Richard Stallman
-
@omni that makes no sense at all
-
@redenchilada He's apparently in the same mindset as the various children who consider piracy to be "Sticking it to the man".
RedEnchilada (notice the lack of a space) likes this. -
@redenchilada It makes sense if you understand his position of proprietary software being bad for your freedom. If you buy an authorized copy, you're supporting the developer in making proprietary software AND giving up your freedom, as opposed to only giving up your freedom when you use an unauthorized copy.
-
@omni Oh, so his nonsense is explained away with more nonsense! Good to know.
-
@redenchilada @thatonestocking How does it not make sense? Which part of it don't you understand?
-
@omni The part that says piracy is justified because you don't like the developer's motives.
Micheal Schlongcoptor likes this. -
@redenchilada He never said that. You're trying to find things in between his words. He still calls it bad.
-
@omni Well, he's certainly saying people who pay for things are committing horrible atrocities!
-
@redenchilada No, he did not.
-
@omni Then what /does/ he mean?
-
@redenchilada He says that it's bad to use proprietary software, because it's bad for your freedom. He adds to that, saying that it's stupid to pay for such software, as you're giving up your freedom and rewarding the creator for taking your freedom away from you. That's all. No more, no less.
-
@omni See, if "it's bad to use proprietary software" held any merit, that'd make sense.
-
@redenchilada In your opinion it doesn't, in his and my opinion it does. I've seen enough cases of proprietary software misbehaving (rootkits in games, software tracking you, etc., etc.) to at least take Richard Stallman seriously. It doesn't mean I will agree with everything he says without thinking for myself, but I don't think his ideas are just junk.

@widget If you're talking about the _NSAKEY thing from literally 15 years ago, I'm pretty sure that turned out not to actually have anything to do with the actual NSA.
