  1. No, friend, I can't make a suitable comparison of Gentoo to Debian/Ubuntu/Mint..

    1. @neurario Gentoo: extremely flexible and powerful when done right, disaster otherwise. The others: should just work.

      1. @omni Indeed, they kind of have different purposes. I don't think this guy has even played with linux, but I get the feeling he's looking for somewhere to jump in. :X

        1. @neurario No sane newbie jumps in with Gentoo. That's like climbing the Mount Everest all by yourself after just having learnt how to crawl. Please, recommend him a more same starting point like Mint.

          1. @omni I finally mastered the power button.. I think I'm ready.

      2. @omni What sucks about Gentoo is the upgrade path. If you don't stay up to date, there's a point when you'll have to start from scratch.

        1. @kamikaze Define "not stay up-to-date". I hope to never get more than a month behind in the worst case scenario., and I normally update my system practically daily.

          1. @omni It's up to chance really as it depends on exactly when the critical system-breaking upgrades happen and how many you miss. One month out of date as a worst case should be perfectly safe though. Three months out of date is getting a bit dicey, and six months out of date is just asking for it to break.

          2. @omni I have some systems that I only update every couple of years.

            1. @kamikaze Why so rarely?

              1. @omni There's no need to update them. They do what they're supposed to.

                1. @kamikaze Are they not connected to the Internet or in another state where security updates are not all that important? I can't believe that would be safe.

                  1. @omni It's BSD. They just get it right the first time.

                    1. @toksyuryel Completely off-topic and I can't work on Gentoo now but... would you recommend me to use genkernel or not? :x

                      1. @omni Never use genkernel. It actually doesn't work at all, I have tried it and it always ends with compile errors.

                        1. @toksyuryel I see. Thanks for the tip.

                  2. @omni Most security vulnerabilities are irrelevant to their use cases. If you only run a couple of server services you very rarely get vulnerabilities that actually affect you.

                    1. @kamikaze I see. I was unaware of that.

          3. @omni You have to update every day? Man, I haven't updated in more than 9 months.

      3. @omni Whereas running FreeBSD, I can take an ancient 4.x installation and update it all the way to the 9.1 Release.
