@awlpony I have to go back on the 9th, that's probably when I'll be told how long I have to get my stuff out before it's put in the trash.

@colfax Hopefully you'll be given proper amount of time. I'm going to presume they won't provide logistics for it; are you able to move the stuff to wherever you'll need to move it?

@awlpony No, I'll have an hour to clear out of the apartment and I'll need to get it to a storage space i currently can't afford till I get my own place. all with nomtransportation or help.

@awlpony I can't have any contact with her at all, I can't even directly address her in the courtroom, so no, that's not going to happen.

@colfax Oh right, the restraining order. I'm wondering if there's a way to prolong the adjournment. Supposing that just not showing up = a ruling in her favour + a warrant for your arrest most like, maybe asking for proof beyond reasonable doubt as to what happened to warrant all this? Not sure how civil case hearings go.

@awlpony We've had one, the judge won't grant another, and yeah, a failure to appear will let it default to her.

@colfax FrankerZing judge. To be expected of course; I figure like the only thing you CAN do in the US legal system is stall for time. Sometimes though the high ups catch wind of what you want to do and block it.

@colfax That's just stinkin' thinkin'. You haven't tried fully explaining your inability to get a lawyer and begging the judge (not to mention your ex, but we needn't go there), or have you? And, even in the worst case scenario, you'll still have a new start in a new town. Have you thought about where that will be or looked for possible jobs that don't require a background check?

@pony We got a 2 week adjournment to find lawyers, but non even want to speak to me because I'm the defendant, so I'm VSF...

@colfax I thought defendants got a public defender or something. Or is that not true in civil cases?

@colfax yeah but a 2 week adjournment or any adjournment doesn't help if you've no money nor job to get credit nor family/friends to cosign for a loan and you've literally contacted every lawyer in the area and a bit outside the area for a reference to one who does charity work. I have a friend who does charity lawyering.. not pro bono. He takes the tough cases for folks who can't pay, but he lives in Utah and never visits NJ and I don't have his contact info which sucks because my father could use his help.

@pony It's considered a domestic violence case, even though there was never any violence, so no one wants to even give me the time of day.

@colfax I don't mean to presume you haven't already tried, but have you thought about calling back some of them and asking for a reference to somebody who actually can help you? Maybe if you explain you've run out of options they'll at least try to think of someone else who can help, though they're unwilling.

@colfax A lawyer can travel even if you can't right? Why not give folks farther away a try? Or bug the one's you've already tried to to get some sort of lead?

@colfax That's for you to decide of course. I just hope you take care of yourself whatever you do. Go eat a pack of dry ramen for 25 cents if you have to. (I used to when I was lazy with the bullion sprinkled over it.)
