@bitshift This would be why it's not quite ideal, but it's a step up because you can at least use a provider that actually puts some effort into securing their service (unlike most sites where they just store passwords in plaintext or use weak hashes). @redenchilada SSH keys would be a further step forward, and something I'd love to be able to use. Right now they're a big hassle to make work though. I know Eevee's done some work on that for one of his projects.
