Just realized that my laptop turned 10 years old a few weeks ago. Amazing how you can keep old #hardware running for so long with GNU/Linux

#Fairphone and #Jolla announce deeper collaboration.
With Fairphone, Jolla shares a very active #community that values #transparency both in #hardware production and #software. Since autumn 2015 Jolla #developer community has been working to port #Sailfish OS to the Fairphone 2, the ethical #smartphone that uses #modular #design to increase the phone’s #longevity and #repairability. Following the progress of the community #porting, Jolla and Fairphone are now evaluating possibilities to enter into commercial collaboration based on common #values.
Olivier Hebert, Chief #Technology Officer at Fairphone comments:
“Making the Fairphone 2 hardware an open development platform has been one of our major ambitions from the start. This way, we can foster innovation into new mobile software technology and applications, while giving users the choice in the operating systems that they want to use. Sailfish OS is something that a large proportion of our … -

I saw a site today offering several services, including "hard and software backup in the cloud". Can anyone explain to me how I can back up my #hardware? It sounds vaguely useful... I think. #ihatehardware

productive day: I now have not onnly selected the RAID station I want, but also which disks to use in it. Interesting detail: the RAID station I selected wasn't even on the market (here, at least) when I started searching for a new one. #hardware #ihatehardware

Can anyone riddle me this? I have this USB thumb called XUPREME, had it for many years; it's 16Gb (the hightst available at the time, said to be extremely fast (which it was, and it's still not sluggish) and reliable (true, given how long I've used it, including on may travels, hot and cold). It still works fine on Nikola (Debian desktop), but on laptop Dennis (LMDE), it's been slowly deteriorating, not detected when it replaces mouse or mobile internet dongle, and since today not even after a cold boot. Another USB thumb works just fine on Dennis. Any idea what could be causing this? old age? problem with laptop HW? problem with LMDE? Something else? #hardware #USB

so, Fedora 17 is fully updated (including things like a Fortran runtime that three or so installed programs actually seem to need!?!). Now I wait a bit, as I don't have a decent system yet to make a backup of my current system. Since the furniture of my renovated workspace is basically finished (but for some details for extra cabling), #tomorrow I'll start ordering new #hardware (including dock/cradles to use or test HDs in order to hopefully pull data off them!): that will be a fun weekend: #ihatehardware but #ilikeorderingstuff :D
