  4. @mk I'm also finding lots of confusion all over the pkace becaue there are many different versions of cron which support (do not support) different features - never mind if they are mentioned in the man page. Hard to know how to write a crontab file that way! #

  5. running into the limitations of busybox again (which is what is installed on Hal, the NAS). There seems to be a 'locate' command, but I don't know where, and it grumbles about not finding things in its database. The solution for that should be the 'updatedb' command, which I cannot find (but should be somewhere if 'locate' exists). finding out where some command is is hard, too, since 'whereis' isn't known (in busybox). #

  9. @mk not so easy: bad blocks are 4096b blocks on the raw disk; creating volumes I get the maximum size in MiB which alrady takes account of the overhead for the FS (and partition table) itself; ended up estimating based on percentages # bad memories of doing such calculations before, long ago... #

  11. @ghostdancer :D oh, that! OK, since I do already have a (one) spare disk (of the same type) I'll do that tomorrow - the bad blocks run won't finish before I get into my # but should be finished when I get up. I'd rather have something I don't need than not have something I do need when I could have had it. #

  12. after a lot of very careful 'treewalking' over dependencies, I've come to the conclusion that for the 10 out of 12 required libraries with dependency conflicts (sometimes second-level dependencies), I'll have to downgrade 11 libraries. so let's see if that actually works... # #

  17. @minti Eeyup. Which is one of the reasons why in my down phases (not in the bipolar sense, just in the "some times I'm more prone to negative thoughts than other times" sense) I feel awful for being so much worse than you at... well, basically everything to do with coding/sysadmin stuff. I've had more time to do it, _and_ it's basically all I am good at, and I'm still worse. #
