@redenchilada @twitchy Finally, there are also @#lists, which you create by giving multiple people a common tag, which you can then use to mention all of them at once in a post with the @#tag format.

If you'd want the user to be informed of your notification. # is somewhat the category in which you'd like to put your notification : it's used to regroup notifications that are supposed to be related to the same subject. Hope i was clear enough.

@redenchilada @twitchy Although the !groupname format is largely obsoleted by the dropdown on the notice box that lets you post to groups without it, it's still supported and many here still use it, either out of habit or to post to multiple groups at a time (which the dropdown option doesn't support).

@twitchy '@' comes before a user's name to notify them when they get a message, like the one before your username. A '#' or a "hashtag" is used to add a post to a list containing every post using the same hashtag. For example, any post with the tag #moustache will show up in that one convenient list.

(Like what the site inserts at the start of replies!) # denotes #tags, which are used to categorize notices on similar topics or types (or sometimes just to be funny). There are also !groups, which are like tags but you have to join them to post to them and they go to the personal timelines of everyone else in said group.
