@awl I guess in my case it's sort of examining the way we use "bad," which is to say I think something can be a great piece of entertainment while not being a great piece of art.
-
@awl I dunno if "bad" is the right word for it, but I definitely have an appreciation for camp
-
I have also not seen it, I've been told it's not good but I like b-movies so it could be my kinda thing
-
@awl I don't think I can off the top of my head. I think the issue with most (if not all) film adaptations of games that I've seen is that they don't acknowledge that the process of adapting doesn't just mean retelling the story in a different medium, it means reframing the narrative in the context of that medium. So many games work on the inherent strengths of their medium that for a good adaptation of them to work the feeling and sensibilities of the game would need to be preserved while structurally composing it to fit the film form.

@rarity I need more Clawhauser
-
@rarity Hell yeah
-
@hayseed Heyo! Someone remembers me!
-
@scoot Damn, that's incredible.
-
@tiffany Orange you glad it only got in one eye?
-
@tiffany you'll never citrust a juice box again
-
@mushi I mean yeah but a generic liquid is generally considered water in the abstract, though that's just semantics so eh
-
@mrmattimation heh, watered down
-
@mushi well you see it was a honeymoon at first but they've now made it a regular couples vacation
-
@thelastgherkin Well yeah, but I dunno if you've played Fire Emblem before or if you made the joke based off of sheer observation, so you could say I'm clarifying the joke for those not in the know.
-
@mushi Your main unit can get a romantic partner, so you can date someone in the game. My earlier post is joking about how the "Fire Emblem as a dating sim" joke isn't technically all that far off the mark, or at least characters getting together is part of the game's strategy at high levels of difficulty.
-
The funny thing about the whole "Fire Emblem as a dating sim" joke is that character pairings are actually really important at higher level difficulties because of the various stat bonuses high rank relationships give.
-
@razzleberry don't you forget about meme
-
@razzleberry basically me whenever I post here these days
-
@redenchilada where's the lie tho
-
@hayseed I used to be northernnarwhal, but I shortened it
-
@redenchilada Quick, make some meta commentary on the state of the site and everyone will favourite it!
-
@hayseed Welcome back! You probably don't remember me, but I remember you (or at least a discussion we had about music at one point).
-
@mrmattimation My brother and I actually have a bunch of inside jokes between us for a handful of commonly used audio effects that we've both recognized since we were young. Funnily enough despite working in audio I actually tend to pay more attention to the visuals in my first run through of a film, though I've also done so much work in audio that it's now easier for me to pick up on and evaluate the audio of something I'm watching.
-
@awl I gotcha. Though even with that in mind, the actual "difficulty" of these things is kind of ambiguous.
-
@yodelerty In that case I guess it's a mixed bag for me
-
@yodelerty I mean if we're going by today's schedules, aside from going to my morning classes I basically spent today going between napping and playing Fire Emblem, with a bit of reading in between, so not too much going on here either.
-
@awl I think something to keep in mind when evaluating media is that effort does not necessary yield Good Things, and it isn't proportional in any way to what could be considered meaningful artistic choices. In this case, there are lots of different and disparate tools that all make up the wider whole of film craft, and the utilization of those tools to construct a film shouldn't be limited to or strictly engaged with by means of a set quality level via traditional metrics or scoring of aforementioned tools. The long and short of it is a film that doesn't have as much detail in some of its craft elements doesn't necessarily make it worse or less meaningful, and there's no hierarchy of film craft tools.
-
@scribus Yeah, I've heard the same. Special and practical effects too.
-
@mrmattimation In spite of its difficulty, doing this work has given me a new appreciation for good mixing and sound design in film and television, so there's that. And like how I mentioned earlier that many audience members don't notice it, by extension lots of amateur and independent content creators tend to to overlook it too, so good on you for paying attention to it.
-
@mrmattimation I have to spot, mix, and apply every necessary effect for this huge action scene for my final (which utilizes stuff like missiles, explosions, huge structures collapsing, lots of yelling, huge vehicles, etc.)
It's very arduous work, and the thing about it is that a good job from an audio-post engineer is meant to not be noticed by the general audience, so it's a line of work hardly credited by regular viewers.
