Watching back through Futurama it’s a bit distracting that Bill Clinton is the most recent face in the Hall of Presidents, surely they could’ve just made some guy up and been like “yeah he was president in the 23rd century”

The biggest trap in"adult" animation is that it uses vulgarity and crass situations too often. It's easy to appeal to juvenile adults with "forbidden" stuff like violence and sexuality but the more lasting stuff are the more day-to-day real adult situations the characters have to deal with. These situations can be comical or otherwise but the basis has to be familiar and relatable and somewhat a base adult life experience. The earlier Simpsons seasons are one of the best as they are not flanderized to the extreme. Bob's Burgers is similar as most episodes deal with heightened but not completely unrealistic situations. I'm not against some violence but it can be grating and numbing and boring when it is used too often.

@chomper These days you can throw a stone and always hit one. The last one I saw was "Inside Job" on Netflix, mostly because it was produced by Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) but it was sadly right in the valley of mediocrity because it went "adult" route and used unnecessary vulgarity.
-
@chomper Hey, I love "Helluva Boss!" I don't deny any of the accusations, lol. Just saying that uuhhhh..... I guess it's lazy *if* you're doing it for fauz gravitas, but it can still be fun. I wouldn't say that's *all* HB has going for it or going on; there's a lot of interpersonal relationship and character development under the bloodbath and pottymouth.
-
@scribus I like most of helluva actually! I just find the edgy humor to be boring and uncreative lol. But I genuinely like a few of the characters and the worldbuilding/lore.

@adiwan oh apple wait does this still work?? all the 3rd party apps I was using got locked out earlier this year and I've been stuck using a hacked version of the main app that fixes most of my issues but is really buggy lol.
-
@chomper It works for now. I was also surprised it wasn't blocked. I guess the user base is so low (and open source) that it doesn't make any difference.
-
@chomper And thank the Users that we can't be bothered by the rest of the Fediverse anymore!
Chomper likes this.

Trying to hit a balance on content is frustrating to me because I don’t want to be vulgar for the sake of it but I also don’t want to be made to tone the adult themes down because the show’s not vulgar enough to appeal to adults. It just seems like there isn’t a market anymore for The Simpsons-level adult content that’s adult on a more conceptual level instead of just relying on vulgarity to appear adult, and that frustrates me.

@zeldatra It's the fine line between "mature content" and "adults only"

I mean hell if this script gets picked up it’s probably getting slapped with a TV-MA rating but most of the language is stuff you end up hearing in the MCU anyway and it’s seen as perfectly acceptable to take your kids to see that
Monday, 05-Jun-23 05:26:37 UTC from web -
the MPAA invented a new rating after Raiders of the Lost Ark showed a guy getting blended but we still haven’t figured out how to handle it when a cartoon character says “god damn”
Monday, 05-Jun-23 05:18:26 UTC from web -
The difference in rating standards between television and movies is staggering to me. A lot of swears that are ok for a PG-13 movie usually guarantee you a Mature Audiences rating on TV, although this is changing with time. Meanwhile, Groundskeeper Willie getting lit on fire and running around screaming is perfectly okay for the PG-rated Simpsons, but the same action had to be cut from Deadpool 2 for the PG-13 version. Nudity keeps your show from airing before 10 o’clock; but you can gather the kids to watch Tom Hanks stare at a chick’s bare ass in Splasj

@zeldatra I could swear I saw where to change the region in the google settings. Ad-hoc I can only see the help page for the Play store https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7431675?hl=en&sjid=2903081056934453095-EU

@adiwan nah, I’m talking about my music clearance service, which exclusively shows me prices in pounds and says my location is the United Kingdom (but the company is headquartered in London, so. Maybe that’s why)

@zeldatra Cross-platform multiplayer, but anyone non-Nintendo can only play a monster?
-
@scribus tears of the kingdom not being multiplayer is a wasted opportunity in general tbh, the amount of insane papaya you’d be able to do with the Rust building mechanics… you don’t even need to justify a second Link, the game does it for you with the Naruto shadow clones that everyone seems to be able to use now.

@zeldatra Man, I have got to overcome my Fallout New Vegas addiction so I can get addicted to Tears of the Kingdom already

I keep running into this problem where the things I write are usually totally cool on the internet where nobody can really stop me from describing mangoio in the crudest terms possible, but right now I’m writing for what is possibly going to be on television and those same words would probably get me a very nasty letter from standards and practices. It’s very hard to go from writing like you’re your own boss to writing in such a way that won’t lose the network twenty million dollars in Wendy’s advertising.

@zeldatra Do like other great shows did: invent new dirty words! Battlestar Galactica used *frak* all the time. It's not about the word, it's all about the inflection. I believe the most innocent word can be turned into a swear word when it's used as a swear word long enough. Using adjacent words can be also a nice opportunity to widen the vocabulary.
-
@adiwan Oh yeah, for real. My great-grandma would never, ever cuss... but she made "fool" sound like the *real* F-word if she got riled up.
-
@scribus She watched too much A-Team and pitied the fool.

On Ren & Stimpy, they used to get away with some of the naughtier jokes by submitting a storyboard to the network with a much tamer joke drawn over the actual joke with a sticky note (as back then it was common to modify storyboards as such rather than use a new template since paper and toner costs money) and they would get the signature on it from S&P, then they’d tear off the sticky note and do the more offensive joke instead, then if anyone asked about it they’d show the network the physical storyboard with S&P approval on it. Can’t do that in the digital age. It ain’t all better (but it mostly is).
