  1. One of these days I ought to roll into the office in full plate and just start swinging

      • I do think it’d have passed already if instead of being called the “Equal Rights Amendment”, the Democrats just renamed it to the “Men’s Rights Amendment” and kept all of the actual text the same.

        • Me, I don’t actually know enough about it to care one way or the other. All I care about is that I live two blocks away from where it’s all going down and will probably sit in on a floor debate at some point.

          • Nevada and Illinois both ratified it last year, to become states 36 and 37. Virginia would be 38. Not sure if many people nationally know or care about it, but over here it’s kind of a big deal to the point that local politicians have been elected over the last few years solely on the platform of ratifying the amendment.

            • I’m in front of the Virginia Capitol, where the final ratification needed to make a US Consitutuinal amendment law MIGHT be passing later in the week? It’s pretty weird when history happens in your backyard.

              • @mrmattimation I say “might” because although the state Senate voted to ratify 26-14 (to overwhelming cheers in the gallery), the House is 51-48 in the GOP’s favor and the Republican speaker is saying he’s just not gonna hold a vote. Through simple vote counting it’s pretty easy to deduce that they would have enough votes to pass it if the speaker would just bring the vote to the floor.

              • @scribus Nah, equal rights amendment. (Removes distinctions between men and women in law, divorce, etc.) In theory I assumed it’d have bipartisan support because no distinctions means no “unfair” laws biased against men in, say, child support decisions. In practice, it’s a different story, I guess.

                • I got into the habit of having multiple web browsers installed when I was dabbling in web design, and I still do it. And then, rather than have multiple windows of one browser when I need to see things all at once (instead of in tabs), I kind of arbitrarily pick one that I'm not currently using. And then, all of my cookies and settings are scattered to the digital winds... And that's to say nothing of my filesystem organization. 10 years of tax returns! . . . somewhere.

                                • There is a difference between grieving and coping with the situation well, which I like to flatter myself is me with a lot of my recent loss (haha not really Im a mess, I just keep it to myself), and grieving and coping with it in a poor way that's self-destructive (which is, by all appearances, Genna.)

I do genuinely have more than a little sympathy for the woman, cancer is a hell of a thing, and so is loss of a loved one.  I loss one of my partners many years ago, albeit not to cancer (but rather, suicide), and I can feel how much of a hole that leaves, but Genna if you actually are reading this, I filled that hole with booze (and drugs) too, and it was not a good look for me, it only dug me deeper, and the problems it left me with are stuff I still struggle with to this day.  You tell yourself you're engaging in that self-destructive catharsis because you want something that feels good when you feel awful, but you're only going to feel more awful afterwards, and how good it feels diminishes every time.  You need to get your life back on track, dear.

                                  • There is nothing so cringe-inducing in life as people trying to justify Genna Bain's taking over TB's channel being a good thing.

Yes, I understand he asked her to carry it on, but that's really not fair to his fans.  It would be like if I suddenly handed over my site to a Roosh V and he started posting PUA articles on it.  This is *obviously* hyperbole to illustrate the point - the point being, that someone of an entirely different character posting about entirely different topics in an entirely different way is not only bound to upset people who follow that stuff, but they are *justified* in being upset, because they're not getting what they went there for.

Genna Bain is entirely entitled to make her online presence about boozing it up being a (not-really-guise-honest!-)kiwiy streamer on twitch, but the people who followed TotalBiscuit for what they perceived as intelligent, high-brow first impressions (non-)reviews of games, are entirely justified in being upset that they are not receiving what they did before, and are instead getting a Fluffle Puffy streamer, and it's not unreasonable for them to leave as a result of that.

                                    • People have made the comment that it's untoward to comment on her private life.  I agree.  There's a lot of stuff I say and do in personal life, that's kept in personal circles, some people would disagree with.  I'm a lesbian, for one, and I have some fairly controversial views on a few subjects (climate change being one of them I've mentioned here).

But the life people are commenting on aren't her private life.  They aren't digging things out from behind the curtain to shine a light on them.  They aren't commenting on private goings-ons or discussions.  They're commenting on things she shares on social media, things she says on podcasts, and so on.  That isn't private.  The things you say and do in public are, by definition, public.

It's respectful and ethical to afford people their private lives as long as they are harming no one in doing so, but the things you say and do in public, are not part of your private life.

                                    • If I started posting images of me half-naked while boozing it up in Vegas, I'd expect many people to criticise me, and I'd expect at least a handful of people here to be genuinely *concerned*.  While there no doubt would be a whole bunch of people who would just be trollish asPotato Knishess, what no one seems to ever be able to acknowledge is that this isn't always all trolling - it oftentimes comes from a place being genuinely concerned about something, or if nothing else, the future of a series they once enjoyed.

                                      • XCOM 1/2 demonstrate the same problem in another engine (Unreal Engine) - there's plenty of games with more polys doing more demanding things with the engine than XCOM does, but their scripting code is weak and inefficient and bogs everything down.

(I get that 3D graphics are complex, I used to get paid to develop based on iDtech and that thing had/has more of the deep magic than most other engines, but Vulkan seems to have a lot of complexity that at least at first blush, seems pretty needless)
