  1. Legitimately considering not coming back to class after the break today. My psych teacher decided to up the crazy and has spent the last hour reading from a book about dream states and alternate realities.

    1. @mrmattimation I did that with a sociology class and literally never went back. Then I dropped out of college. Now I run this place. Choose your path wisely.

      1. @ceruleanspark after the literal threats to my wellbeing last night this is my second day in a row dealing with somebody who is certifiably insane, I dunno how much more I can take

        1. @mrmattimation sounds like you need a vacation

      2. @ceruleanspark I went to college and learned a trade. It turns out that my degree isn't particularly useful, as all the high paying jobs around here are controlled by corrupt, nepotistic "unions". I found out I could make more money doing building maintenance than working as an HVAC mechanic/service technician.

        1. @m14brony Same thing is happening with me and my sister it seems
We went into Informatic Engineering mainly so we could get the title of engineer, we already had general knowledge of Hard and Software use and manipulation, and while the programming classes were great and have taught us both a lot, for one they are not worth the money we're spending on here because mostly they amount to: "here's an objective, now google how to do it"; no joke we're told to google examples and copy paste it, making changes to make it work with our programs.
and what hits me harder is that the rest of the classes are papayaING USELESS for my future, professionally speaking (Mathematic Analysis is the biggest example I can give, it is 100% useless and they don't even let us use calculators... SOLVING MATHS WAS THE ENTIRE PURPOSE FOR WHY COMPUTERS WERE CREATED FFS)
Another big problem is that we are taught JACK apple about Hardware, kids leave here not knowing the diference between a DDR3 and a SCSI adaptor

    2. @mrmattimation go into class, shout: PSYCHOLOGY ISN'T A REAL SCIENCE, AND EVERY ONE OF THE "GREAT NAMES" OF PSYCHOLOGY HAVE DONE THINGS THAT WOULD AT THE VERY LEAST BRAND THEM AS SERIAL TORTURERS and leave
      It's what I would do
I still can't believe that thing is taught in "schools"

      1. @zennx >he thinks psychology isn't a real science

Thursday, 03-Nov-16 20:31:03 UTC from web
        1. @redenchilada It's not, it's a series of anecdotal evidence and single case files
Science provides standardization of events and occurrences (broad eg: Geologists know that a piece of limestone in Europe or the US are basically the same microscopically and can be treated as such)
Psychologists can't figure out how a brain works even if they look at a thousand other brains.
People go into the same negative psychological state for completely different reasons
and even if a 2 people got into a state of, per example, depression due to the EXACT same cause, they can't be treated the same way kuz they will react differently to treatment no matter what

Thursday, 03-Nov-16 20:39:26 UTC from web
        2. @redenchilada just to make my point clearer:
I'm not saying Psychology can't BECOME a science
I'm saying that right now it it IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM a science and should not be taught as such

Thursday, 03-Nov-16 20:40:39 UTC from web
          1. @zennx it's called pseudoscience, meaning it follows the scientific method even if results are up for dispute

Thursday, 03-Nov-16 20:41:08 UTC from web
            1. @tiffany Know waht else is a pseudoscience?
Cryptozoology, and equally if someone told me I had to pay money to hear people talk about bigfoot sightings and Loch Ness monster 101 I'd hit them in the face with a shovel

Thursday, 03-Nov-16 20:54:34 UTC from web
              1. @zennx I don't really know what to tell you if you're comparing cryptozoology to, I dunno... the study of autistic children, depression, PTSD, child development, sociopathy, psychopathy

Thursday, 03-Nov-16 20:56:31 UTC from web
                1. @tiffany it's not the study of autistic children, depression and PTSD
it's the analysis of AN autistic child, A depression and A case of PTSD
what they learn with a single case will most likely not apply to the next, and when they try to do so it WILL cause more harm.
nothing was ever improved with the use of single case studies, and nothing will.

                  1. @zennx I mean... no. The only psychologist who had a single case study was Freud, and while his methodology was criticised after (especially since he was the founder of psychoanalysis) because it WAS very specific to a particular child, even his unorthodox analysis was the foundation for psychoanalysis, from which we know more about phobias, the unconscious mind, etc. Every OTHER psychologist I can think of had many more participants in their study. Sure, any psychologist today who studies a single case and/or deems their results infallible is an idiot, but we've come a long way since Freud so I don't really know what/who you're actually basing this on.

                    1. @tiffany only psychologist I can think of*

                    2. @tiffany The treatment of individuals is ALWAYS considered a single case study, when you go to a doctor with an accident burn it is, for all purposes, considered a single case study.
and my main problem with this is that in multiple cases either the psychiatrist, or the patient will treat it as an EXACT science instead of a borderline functional and, in it's current state, a new, immature and VERY prone to failure one.
                      BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN PEOPLE DIE
and if there's one death I will never condone is one brought by ignorance and lack of information

Thursday, 03-Nov-16 21:36:57 UTC from web
                      1. @zennx 1) I think you're missing the step that goes between a study and the application of said study
                        2) I think you're implying that it's better to not do anything at all than to try to fix something? If so... agree to disagree, I guess?
                        3) I think you might be confusing psychology with something else, because I can't see any way to apply my idea of psychology to actual risk of death, even when it comes to the least morally sound psychologists like Milgram. I mean, when it comes to, say, someone claiming vaccines cause autism with no actual basis and people take THAT as fact, then absolutely that's terrible, but that's a different realm of science entirely, so I still don't know where you're coming from in regards to the study of the mind

                        1. @tiffany ...I'm saying this because I had a friend... and because of a moron who had a diploma and thought he could play healer just because he was on a winning streak she's not around anymore.
and I will not let that happen to anyone again, not if I can help it

on the other hand I've also had friend who were almost gone, and thanks to great people with the same diplomas who know what they were doing and what they were, are still here...

and when I hear about teachers going on mad ramblings about dream states and alternate realities I'm pretty sure more of the 1st kind are going to come out
                          and I don't like it
and when I don't like something
                          I get rid of it
