@triplesonicrainboom There are going to be people like that anyway. Yeah, it's nice that there is a fandom formed on a show that encourages being nicer to each other and good deeds, but it takes people of all kinds in the world we live in. Skeptics included ;)

@yodelerty it's something my friends and I debate. We acknowledge that sure, you can qualify for welfare, but you can't show the gov't that you actually /deserve/ that money more than someone else. This is where welfare fails. This is also where super-right-wingers exaggerate and attack, but I doubt they understand the real failure behind the system

@pegasusjones Don't turn some girl's struggle with a life-ending disease into a statistic for your fandom-praising records. It's nice how much support she got and I would never even think to suggest taking it back, but I really don't think the people who supported her did so only for the sake of a fandom they were a part of. (I certainly hope they didn't, anyway.)

@pegasusjones @redenchilada good folks in this fandom! I like the term "love and respect" more than "love and tolerate." Sometimes love and tolerance counter eachother but that's not true of respect in my experience.

@pegasusjones there's the pitfall as I see it. By tolerating we're not helping them to become better happier people. Loving them as a person sometimes means holding boundaries and not tolerating their actions for their own sake. Love means being willing to take their anger for your intercession or disapproval because you care more about their wellbeing than about how they feel about you.

@pegasusjones I respect people as people even when they try to injure me or when I fight against their causes. Maybe tolerating them as a person is similar, but it sounds grudging or lukewarm when i say, "I tolerate you," instead of, "I respect you." When it comes to their actions, saying, "I respect what you're doing," shows approval and warmth where, "I tolerate what you're doing," sounds again like I don't approve. I don't see the point of just going along with/tolerating something that could hurt somepony. Love spurs us to action, not passive coexistence.

@pegasusjones i think the meaning of "respect" is lost in much of the younger generation. Religious folks respect the devil, for example, as wise and powerful, but they don't offer him friendship because they know (or ought to know) his nature. Respecting a cat would mean giving it space if it didn't want to be cuddled. I'm not sure I'm getting your point except that maybe you just see the use of "respect" and "tolerate" differently than I do.

@vt3c pretty much all hatred is either taught or stems from one's ignorance. For me, I am making up for several years of my own bigotry stemming from my Christian upbringing. It wasn't until the late 0's that I grew out of that, and I still apologize to a lot of people for what I used to say to them or about them
