  2. Soo... how 'bout that Unity blowup? !vgp

about 9 months ago from web
    • @scribus Unity is in the red for years and buying Weta wasn't cheap so they were grasping for the most stupid decision to gain (repeatable) revenue by choosing to get paid by the amount of installs of the games. The problem is that indie game developers have very little profit and it can cost more in the long run than it gained profit. Also the way to determine the amount of installs is not clear. The last information I heard was that Unity wanted to use a heuristic to guess the amount of installs. Also Unity did that decision out of nowhere and tried to cover their tracks by sneakily removing paragraphs in their license that would hinder that license change. Unity had image problems (being used for asset-flip games, taking a lot of time for updates and being behind on the technical side) before but that was a huge kick in the balls to devs and all people who bought games made with Unity.

    • @adiwan their president also sold 2000 shares just before the install thing was announced, adding up to about 50k in the preceding year. seems bad

    • @zeldatra Him being at EA before that goes great with that... I read that that amount of stocks was only a very small percentage of his stock holdings. Still looks scummy.

  4. Weird thought I just had: do you think someone who doesn't know sign language would have an easier time understanding ASL or something improvised by another non-ASL-knower?

about 9 months ago from web
    • @scribus Typed an entire response about how ASL would probably be the harder one only to realize that my reasoning applies to braille, not ASL. I found ASL somewhat easy to learn (could not use it today, though) and I’m crazy bad with foreign languages so maybe the answer’s in there somewhere?

about 9 months ago in context
    • @zeldatra According to 2 people on a discord server I'm on, one of whom has a non-verbal child, improvised is easier (and the ASL sign for "Hallway" and "Focus" are the same except for the eyebrows)

  5. If you played all the Yakuzas as they were coming out, starting from Yakuza PS2, by the time you get to Yakuza 0 it probably starts to look like Kiryu actually died and the games that followed (in order, a samurai spin-off starring a real life historical figure with Kiryu’s face grafted on where he meets other real life historical figures who look like his friends and enemies, a prequel set in the 80s, and a remake of the first game with stuff that didn’t happen in the original release) are just his brain coming to terms with death

  6. There are no restrooms in Washington DC metro stations. I had to venture into the city on Saturday to find a bathroom. Found a Macy’s. It was close enough. What I’m mad about is that in DC you get charged your fare when you leave the station rather than the way it works in Europe where you pay for a distance up front, so I basically paid $2 to use the bathroom.

    • @scribus my CGI models are all built in an incredibly stupid way that would make any other 3D artist pull their hair off so for this pilot I’ve had to go in and clean up some things in the event that somebody else has to look at it.

  15. @zeldatra Know anything about Cartoon Animator by Reallusion? Looking for something that isn't OpenToonz or a massive monthly subscription for mostly one-off, here-and-there kind of little things.

    • @zeldatra One major thing I've got is just a simple geometric pattern I want to have rotating externally and counter-rotating on the internal designs, which tbh I could probably write in like eight lines of COBOL or something equally outdated in concept, lol

about a year ago in context
    • @scribus Moho or Blender would be your best bets probably, with the latter you could just prep the images in Photoshop or something like that beforehand you could just import each element into Blender as a plane and just have the camera looking at them flat from above, with a sun lamp pointing straight down for uniform lighting.

  19. so like what should I post about on here? should I use it more like livejournal with long introspective effortposts about what’s going on in my life, or more like twitter and just spew off short little jokes and thoughts as they come? I feel like what excited me about having a place like this when I rediscovered it was being able to share my thoughts, feelings, and ideas without having to contribute to an already congested and overstimulating platform like twitter that vampirically feeds off your attention, but now I’m realizing I don’t know what I want to even say lmao.

  21. Futurama’s society has no conception of how, when, and where the moon landing occurred, but they have video of Rudy Giuliani putting a bunch of garbage on a barge and pushing it out to sea. What were the standards for the retention of information?

  22. The Outlast Trials is a very fun co-op game but it falls unfortunately short on actual scares, probably because actual scares are not really that conducive to a fun co-op experience.

about a year ago from web
    • @zeldatra the opening tutorial sequence is pretty unsettling but as far as scares go you see just about everything the game has to offer in that first sequence and the rest of the game afterwards is a co-op extraction stealth game where you drop into a map, achieve a certain number of specific objectives while avoiding enemies, occasionally get jump scared by a body you thought was dead or an enemy hiding in a locker (and these scares become tiresome very quickly as the same animation is SWF every time and they always occur under the same circumstance), then make your way back to the starting area with one or more of the enemies from the level either chasing you or waiting for you by the exit, and then you and your friend leave. It’s fun for what it is but the survival horror aspect from the first two games, which I initially purchased the game for, is almost completely gone and replaced with Jigsaw-level gratuitous gore and shock dialogue the hunters give you when they’re patrolling.
