Soo... how 'bout that Unity blowup? !vgp
about 8 months ago from web-
@scribus Unity is in the red for years and buying Weta wasn't cheap so they were grasping for the most stupid decision to gain (repeatable) revenue by choosing to get paid by the amount of installs of the games. The problem is that indie game developers have very little profit and it can cost more in the long run than it gained profit. Also the way to determine the amount of installs is not clear. The last information I heard was that Unity wanted to use a heuristic to guess the amount of installs. Also Unity did that decision out of nowhere and tried to cover their tracks by sneakily removing paragraphs in their license that would hinder that license change. Unity had image problems (being used for asset-flip games, taking a lot of time for updates and being behind on the technical side) before but that was a huge kick in the balls to devs and all people who bought games made with Unity.
-
@adiwan their president also sold 2000 shares just before the install thing was announced, adding up to about 50k in the preceding year. seems bad
-
@zeldatra Him being at EA before that goes great with that... I read that that amount of stocks was only a very small percentage of his stock holdings. Still looks scummy.

There are no restrooms in Washington DC metro stations. I had to venture into the city on Saturday to find a bathroom. Found a Macy’s. It was close enough. What I’m mad about is that in DC you get charged your fare when you leave the station rather than the way it works in Europe where you pay for a distance up front, so I basically paid $2 to use the bathroom.

@scribus In my city there are some but you have really look for them, as most of them are hidden. I used google maps today to look up where they are and I'm surprised that there are more than I thought. Even a place I regularly drove by had one and I didn't know until now. There are no big signs or like that. Most of them are near parks and they are hidden behind bushes.
-
@adiwan And you're sure that isn't just sneaking off behind the bushes? lol
-
@scribus Haha. Nah. I think they are there to reduce the eye sore of the out of place looking buildings.

Gardening will be a pain. Everything is mostly overgrown with ivy. There was even a cut dead tree fully overgrown by that stuff. The tree was so decayed it was basically at the strength of cardboard. The ivy gave it the most structural integrity.

It's funny how cheap wine is less expensive than empty bottles
about 8 months ago from web-
@scribus Yeah. Preserving jars are almost the same in that regard. It's cheaper to just buy stuff that's sold in a preserving jar than to buy them empty. A family member has some apple trees and the preserving jars I collected were used to preserve apple sauce made from these apples.

"Ghostbusters: Afterlife" what a bad movie. For the most part it's "fine". Very slow pacing but "fine". The last act was the kick into the groin.
about 9 months ago from web -
The last season of Disenchantment is quite a mess in how the story was told.
about 9 months ago from web-
@adiwan I think the whole show would have gone a lot better if the first 4 seasons tried to develop the overarching plot during the whole season instead of just the first and last 2 episodes. This latest one was, like, "all plot, all the time!" and it felt so slapped together. Not awful, but I'm glad they didn't try to keep it alive for 40 years, and I'm not hopeful that Comedy Central will pick it up for a revival in 2030.
-
@scribus I think the creators had a lot of internal conflict on how to create an epic and make the episodes episodic, like Futurama and Simpsons. I fully agree with you. I really liked the characters, some more, some less, but none were truly terrible (even Elfo to some degree). It's just that the plot made all of them brainless and stupid stretching all of the characters to an unrecognizable form. Fast-forwarding a lot of the plot didn't help. In this season, multiple times, there was no reason to stop a chase but it happened despite no reason at all.

Ah F***!!!! Got a bill from the government for the tax for buying land. 11k€ down the drain. I knew I had to pay it before I got into thinking about buying a house. It still stings nonetheless. That's about 2800 comic issues!

oh boy i cant wait! AHAHHAAHAAAAAAA I WANT TO DIE
about 9 months ago from web -
In a week I'll own a house! I'd be happier if the city wouldn't penny-pinch me. I had to pay a bill for something that the city should pay themselves: an investigation if the city has an interest in buying the house (first refusal right).
about 9 months ago from web-
@adiwan Wow that is a dumb demand, but congratulations on the homeownership!
-
@scribus Thanks. The bill was 65€ for that. I will certainly suffer for pleasure of owning a home, especially since there was nothing done for over 40 years and has still wallpaper from the late 70s. What has to be done: New switch box (solar power ready), new electric cables, new windows, roof isolation, the wilderness of a garden needs to be tamed. Also when I'm at it I'll lay down network cables everywhere, at least CAT7 and glass fiber.

Done with Yakuza 4, now on Yakuza 5. Big thing I’m noticing about 5 is that it’s slightly more impressive both technically and as a game than Yakuza Kiwami, which released four years later on a next gen console, which is a bit confusing to me but whatever
about 9 months ago from web-
@zeldatra I also think 5 is the most varied in style and tone and side-stuff. I really enjoyed the taxi missions and wished there were more of them.

That’s Yakuza 3 out of the way, would’ve finished it sooner but due to the way combat works it takes roughly two hours to do one random encounter of beginner level thugs
about 9 months ago from web-
@zeldatra And no more "Aniki!" being shouted constantly.
-
@adiwan my completion rating is pitifully low because I couldn’t stand the dated gameplay any longer lmao. I’m enjoying Yakuza 4 much much more.
-
@zeldatra I know that feeling. It felt like a breeze starting 4, as if someone released the hand brake.

ChatGPT seems to believe that Sora from Kingdom Hearts would be perfectly willing to ally with Tony Soprano but would draw the line at Walter White and I’m uncomfortable with the knowledge that, to an AI, the line between friend and foe lies somewhere between “murderous mob boss” and “murderous drug lord” and not well before both points.

@zeldatra Seems to be perfectly in line with any other fan fiction writer.

Twitter is essentially dead for me. I used to lurk some creators on twitter but my open source twitter client choqok failed to fetch any new data for a week now.

OK what kind of jerk wears flip-flops to the library, and why did it have to be me? ;_;

@scribus Could be worse. You could wear those novelty house slippers that make a "fun" sound when making a step.

My D&D group started a new campaign and the starting level is 2. I managed to be at 0HP three times within the first two sessions. The first time was a mimic (a barrel), then a quickling, and then some goblinoids with slings.
about 10 months ago from web-
@scribus It's a female lizardfolk grassland druid with the name "Chamilia Moonsicle". This type of druid is not a tank. With the natural armor and a wooden shield she has 16 AC. Not bad but still too squishy for my taste.
The first down-to-zero-HP moment happened as she examined a weird barrel that happened to be a mimic-like animated creature. The next time it was a Quickling she managed to percieve (Quickling moved extremely fast) and followed a few steps out of the door, where she got stabbed 3 times with high damage rolls. Then she was hit to the head with a sling by a goblinoid savage (having little HP at the beginning of the battle didn't help either).
I didn't play unreasonable and not without caution but it was more dumb luck than anything else. -
@adiwan Man, does dumb luck get stupid sometimes, though... lol
-
@scribus To be totally frank: I have a long history of having many dead characters and stupid moments initiated by my dumb decisions. This time, I swear, wasn't the case.
-
-
It sounds obvious in retrospect that you should just play 0 first anyway but I wasn’t expecting them to insert much from 0 into the remakes given how closely the actual story cutscenes stick to the source material
about 10 months ago from web-
@zeldatra I started with 0 as it is basically the beginning of Kiryus story, even though it was told much later after the Yakuza 1 release. 0 has some minor spoilers for 4 and quite some references to other installments. It didn't bother me. I rather liked it because I got an 'aha' moment and understood the reference retroactively, making the scene a little bit richer and due to the backstory aspect more understandable. The problem one can see more is making the decision when to play 0. When it comes to real downgrades Yakuza games 3 is the one that aged the worst, as it didn't get the Kiwami treatment and modernizing the controls and gameplay feel. Looking back on it it has some endearing retro aspect of the PS3 era when looking past those flaws. Generally starting with Kiwami 1 isn't bad either gameplay-wise, as the other games feel much more open and there are more areas besides Kamurocho.
-
-
Not that I think this is a bad thing, but I got whiplash upon learning that Kiryu, a Japanese man in 2005 approaching middle age who in the lead-up to Yakuza has been in prison since the 90s, and before that having been in a criminal syndicate since the 80s, is not homophobic, and is perfectly pleasant and even supportive of his cabaret date upon learning she’s a lesbian.
about 10 months ago from web-
@zeldatra Kazuma Kiryu is the most based and good-hearted yakuza who uses violent methods. There is a sub story in 3 where he meets a trans woman https://i.redd.it/339rcr2v8nm61.jpg

OK well Moho keeps basic, fundamental necessities like "manipulating bezier handles" behind their $400 edition so I think they can mango themselves just on principle alone
about 10 months ago from web-
@adiwan Then why can every other godrotten POS application handle it just fine??
-
@adiwan Like, I can get that over the scope of a 3D or even 2D "world" that the *absolute* position of a player character's sword swing is much less relevant than the (...well...) /relative/ position of the sword to the character. God, I wish it could just snap, or use guidelines, or snap to guidelines, or *any* kind of precision that's been available in draw programs since at least 1995. Ugh :shiver: I can't abide loosey-goosey, nosiree, not in this context at least. :p

@scribus Welp... Time to program a new tool with blackjack and hookers

I tasted mead recently but it tasted more like acetone and couldn't stomach more than a few drops. But it's a "me"-problem. It was good and not spoiled. I just have a different taste. Even normal wine tastes like some kind of acetone to me. Grape juice itself is alright for me. I guess the fermentation products are causing the putrid smells and tastes that my nose and tongue cannot deal with. Also beer smells like wet and half-eaten bread with vinegar. Pure vodka also is very nasty as it creates a very strong burning sensation in the esophagus.
Never gonna be drunk because of that alone.about 11 months ago from web -
Well it looks like my mead is turning out to be a success, and even my mad science "cherry Coke wine" might be working out
about 11 months ago from web-
@scribus Cool! A few friends of mine make honey mead from time to time.

Today in “I can’t believe this actually happened to me”, my boss is upset that I answered an email from the district manager before he did because in his mind it makes him look bad. The email was addressed to both of us and I already had the answer + required paperwork on me because I had been investigating the same thing that the DM wanted me to know about. Maybe answer the email faster then?
about 11 months ago from web-
@zeldatra Your boss has some serious inferiority complex and cannot be proud to have good and promptly working people under his umbrella and cannot be happy not doing the work himself. Seriously I think he wanted to be the man doing this in order to show more face in front of his superiors and gather more reasons for a pay raise.
