@thatonepony @toksyuryel When I'm in the middle of an in-depth conversation I usually ignore unrelated posts depending on how busy the public timeline is. There was one time I was told by colfax not to discuss religion and that honestly bothered me, but it was more about how he told us to stop the conversation, not the fact that he stopped it.

@thatonepony I don't know.
-
@thatonepony Mmm, nothing's topped Feeling Pinkie Keen for me yet. I haven't really watched anything past Family Appreciation Day enough to opinionate on them yet, though.
-
@redenchilada Does that mean you haven't watched The Last Roundup? Because that episode was awesome, and not because of what it's infamous for.
-
@toksyuryel I've watched every episode. Once. I want to download them and watch them again.
-
@redenchilada Ditto. xD
-
@thatonepony I don't follow Public. At all. I honestly wish Public didn't even exist. StatusNET is a twitter replacement for me, and I intend to use it like one. I made my account here because this one advertised itself as being for bronies, but StatusNET itself is much bigger than one site. I've managed to find some sort of comfort zone within the limitations the existence of Public necessitates: I can live with staying PG-13, I can live with the 48-hour spoiler delay, I can even live with having to keep my posts at least somewhat meaningful, but if I'm not even going to be allowed to discuss non-pony things just because some people don't want to see them in Public that will probably be the thing that finally makes me take my account to a different StatusNET site. I don't HAVE to be here to talk to any of you, I can do so from *any* StatusNET site. I chose this one because it's for bronies and I consider myself to be one.

@pony Discussion of religion on a forum has never ended well in my experience.
-
@yeepzor In our case it was causing some reactions from people in the Public timeline, but the two actually discussing things, myself and @omni , were very polite and self-moderated. It ticks me off when people aren't mature enough to handle conflict on such a basic level.

@pony I often get the uneasy feeling that the site is being run like a forum or chatroom instead of like a microblogging site. I feel it less now with the new admins though. I feel like they get it.
-
@toksyuryel I think I agree. It may be too soon for me to tell though. of course @ceruleanspark runs ECH which I understand has virtually no rules, so he's used to letting things go
-
@yeepzor This isn't supposed to be a forum though. It is the existence of Public that turns it into one.
-
@toksyuryel Agreed. As I see it, the entire point of social networks (and as a subset of them, microblogs) is that you only follow people who post stuff you'd like to see. Public is a useful thing to have (so you _can_ see everything going on if you wish), but it's a bad default way to use the site, imo.

@spectrumscramble Yeah, exactly.
-
@spectrumscramble It's great for meeting ponies though.
-
@spectrumscramble >Public >a bad default way to use the site >Have you ever been on RDN? Like, at all?
-
@toksyuryel Allow me to respond to this old post. Who are you to decide what the "point" of this website is? If the existance of Public turns the website into a forum, and that's how the majority prefers it, than that's how it'll be run. That's how it's _been_ run for the past year.
-
@redenchilada I am not one to decide that- I am attempting to find out if it *is* one so that I can make an informed decision on whether or not I want to *stay* here. The way this conversation is going it's starting to look like what I feared is correct, but I'm still going to wait for word from the new admins for final confirmation on that.
-
@toksyuryel Yeah, we're a forum. If you'd prefer to stay to yourself, this really isn't the place for you to be. Sorry.
-
@redenchilada I don't think of it as "staying to myself". I will say though that you're using the wrong software if your intent is to be a forum. StatusNET is microblogging software meant to offer an open and decentralized alternative to Twitter. The fact that this site uses it led me to assume that this was a microblogging site. You should explore the prospect of using different software if that's not what you want the site to be. And that's why I'm waiting for the admins to respond because they're the only ones that can say with certainty what the site is intended to be.
-
@toksyuryel I consider it to be almost like a chatroom with twitter features.
-
@toksyuryel You'll have to ask Cabal if you want to know what this site was meant to be. And for him to answer... well, you'll have to be lucky.
-
@comradenerthos The admins are @mrdragon and @ceruleanspark now. They might have a different plan for the site than @cabal did.
-
@comradenerthos Especially since he's not really running it anymore.
-
@toksyuryel yeah like when you posted Dr. Horrible's sing a long Blog. I never would have enjoyed it again if weren't set up like it is.
-
@toksyuryel @comradenerthos @redenchilada This site isn't a forum, it's a social networking centre for bronies. It isn't restricted to talking about ponies. There is a link to a actual forum at the top, which was the reason why it was added to separate that line. I'd of replied sooner, however, mental and emotional issues are a nightmare to deal with.
-
@toksyuryel They'll mantaining the concept mostly intact, because it ran for a year without problems.
-
@toksyuryel Software has "intended purposes" and can't be used for other things now? Besides, the nice thing about the software is that it functions like a chatroom, but has conversation logging that helps discussions.
-
@colfax Yeah, but even when he did, he barely showed up.
-
@comradenerthos He had a life and real life work and studying to do. And Tinker had to deal with work and her huge commitment with the Brony Fandom
-
@mrdragon I never said otherwise. I liked him, in fact xD
-
@redenchilada floppy drives were made for reading and writing floppy disks. I use them for making music. StatusNet was made for microblogging. I sorta use it as a chatroom. Now, I swear I'll go to sleep this time.

@mrdragon Alright, thank you for the clarification. And sorry to hear about that, I hope you will be ok *offers a hug*
-
@toksyuryel We don't mind a bit of a normal discussion, but for a long based and winded talk it really is best to take it to the forum about it. That has the features and the conference to debate about it easier.
-
@toksyuryel And thank you, I will be ok now.
-
@techdisk42 And desktop ponies isn't a stress test.
-
@techdisk42 lol again have a good night :D
-
@mrdragon What about when that discussion is cross-network though? The forum can't connect to the entire StatusNET network, or can it?
-
@toksyuryel Public isn't connected either.
-
@toksyuryel To be perfectly honest, if you're going to discuss with people on other sites, why do it from here?
-
@toksyuryel No, it's a basic SMF forum, set up for this site and in large the brony community if they wish to be there. It has it's own chat system as well (although that's a crazy place)
-
@eaglehooves Which is half the reason I don't use it.
-
@redenchilada Like I said, that's what the StatusNET software is *for*. I have my account here because I have to have it *somewhere*, and since I'm a brony I thought why not have it on the one that's for bronies? I didn't expect it to turn out like this.
-
@toksyuryel But wouldn't there be better places to have an account if you're posting on other websites? Some place that's on a better server, and better-prepared for that kind of stuff?
-
@toksyuryel I thought that statusnet was for groups and companies to set up their own small scale networks, and tweak them to their liking. I think you still need a different account for other statusnet based sites.
-
@eaglehooves Nope, you can follow, mention, reply to, and do all the other things you do no matter what site they have their account on. See the button marked "remote" underneath your subscriptions in the sidebar? That's where you can add subscriptions to users that are on a different StatusNET site. You can do the same with groups.
-
@toksyuryel @eaglehooves OStatus is an amazingly scary thing.
-
@toksyuryel Only if the statusnet install allows it, via the Ostatus app.
-
@mrdragon This one allows it, which I took as further evidence that my usage was not considered atypical.
-
@toksyuryel You are, honestly, the only one using it. :S
-
@toksyuryel This one allows it yes, but what I am meaning is you will need to find a Statusnet that also does (Not all do, a lot are privatised communities)
-
@toksyuryel I've only ever used one other statusnet based site, and it didn't work.
-
@toksyuryel Just so you know, we are trying to find a way to block indeti.ca accounts. We've had issues with them in the past, and have been used for spam and other things. And as we can't delete their accounts, only their dashes, it's easier to remove it.
-
@mrdragon Mmmkay, so I guess running my own instance will be the only fallback available then, if I find I can't justify staying here.
-
@mrdragon Actually the most likely scenario is I'll just end up on ECH once it's working again.
-
@toksyuryel If you want statusnet without being part of the public chat that makes up 95% of RDN, then you might have to run your own instance. You really don't seem to want to be a part of this site. You seem to want statusnet, but you don't want to talk to or hear most of us.
-
@toksyuryel If it works again.. What with RDN taking up all the power, I don't know if handling another Statusnet install is going to be the best of ideas. Especially after we get the site upgrade and start using RDNRefresh and Realtime.
-
@eaglehooves Pretty much. I didn't join for the community. I end up talking to most of it anyway because as a brony I'd want to follow lots of bronies and they're pretty much all here too, but as far as Public goes I don't look at that at all.
-
@mrdragon And now that ECH and RDN are under the same management now, I'm really not sure what the point of having two would be.
-
@mrdragon Eep. Did not realize that.
-
Wow I do not want to wake up to an inbox full of "Hey people are talking about stuff I don't like, make them stop" again. You get me?
RDN's Lucifer and Toksyuryel like this. -
@ceruleanspark was it the discussion about socialism?
-
@ceruleanspark Hey people are talking about stuff I don't like, can I make them stop? c:
-
@redenchilada ALRIGHT THAT'S IT I'M SHUTTING DOWN THE INTERNET.
-
@ceruleanspark Can I take your spot?
-
@ceruleanspark Don't! I'll have to go....outside...
-
@pony Oh yeah, I remember that. Was a nice discussion in my honest opinion but I could understand some people felt offended, seeing how people generally think of gay rights and stuff. Want to thank you for that discussion though, was interesting at very least, albeit I didn't agree much (but that's fine, everybody is allowed to have their own opinion)
