  1. Alrighty, money taken from donations, once that comes in to my bank I can pay off the server again for this month. Just scraped the payment, can't wait for to get the cheaper box now.

    1. @mrdragon Ooh, we're moving again? What's the diff between the old and new boxes?

      1. @bitshift A 2 X duel core 3.2ghz processoer on the new, to a simple 2.0ghz duel core on this. 16 GB of ram on the new, 3GB on this. 2 X 1tb harddrives to the 160b HHD on this. And it's cheaper.

        1. @mrdragon Wait, wait. This whole thing has been running with 3GB RAM? What kind of witchcraft have you and @ceruleanspark been working to keep it alive? O.o

        2. @mrdragon oh wow so basically the current server is less powerful than my _laptop_

Sunday, 20-May-12 18:42:53 UTC from StatusNet Android
        3. @mrdragon Funny, my new computer is somewhat similar, but a 6x core cpu (2.7 GHz) and only a single 1.5 TB hard drive. 16GB of ram though.

          1. @toksyuryel Ok, why the _hell_ would you need 16GB of RAM for normal computing (unless you're talking about a server you have, in which case I'll shut up now.)

Sunday, 20-May-12 18:45:36 UTC from StatusNet Android
            1. @redenchilada I don't do normal computing. I like to continue multitasking while compiling software, and I'm running PostgreSQL on here so I can actually test the statusnet replacement I've been working on.

              1. @toksyuryel *shrug* Fair enough. I'm not gonna try to assume how much memory those take, be wrong, and end up looking dumb in the end.

                1. @redenchilada If it weren't for my need to multitask, 8GB would be plenty. But suppose I have 30-some tabs open in firefox while compiling something while PostgreSQL is running and I want to play Minecraft. This is when it's real handy to have that 16GB sitting in there.

              2. @toksyuryel oh and you're running statusnet so yeah I guess you _would_ need all that ram

Sunday, 20-May-12 18:50:27 UTC from StatusNet Android
                1. @redenchilada Not running statusnet, writing a replacement.

                  1. @toksyuryel Interesting. How much progress have you made with that, so far? What have you already implemented and what are you planning on implementing?

                    1. @omni Currently still working on the database end. This is doubling as a project for properly learning all these languages and tools so I would not expect speedy progress. My plans are to implement full compatibility with the statusnet "API", and then extend it via a new API that isn't stupid. (actually most of this project can be summed up as "making a new statusnet that isn't stupid")

            2. @redenchilada I have 16GB on my desktop as well, reason why? I burnt out my original 4GB DDR3 so I needed a upgrade, it only cost me £80 for the same type and make of the 16GB so that was money well spent. Not to mention at peak times I can hit a good 9GB of usage. (especially if Chrome want's to be an papayas) @bitshift @ceruleanspark has worked wonders, when we first moved over, posting a notice was a minute long experience, now it's instant. It's been a long run to get it to here, and he just can't keep his hooves off of it. @redenchilada pretty much. The new one will allow me to open services like gaming and so on to the community, to help bring more to RDN's future.

              1. @mrdragon (if you're hitting 9GB of usage, I hope it's due to some heavy multitasking...) But yeah, this sounds like it can only be a good thing. (Could one hypothetically develop a game database setup linked to RDN accounts and host it on here, then? XP)

                1. @redenchilada If I can get some great developers in on it, it's a large possibility for the future to do.

                  1. @mrdragon Neat! I've thrown around ideas for (i.e.) online time attack boards and the like on my project (I'm just rabbling on now aren't I) and I had come up with a solution that didn't require anything on this site's part, but having something like that integrated would be amazing to have.

                    1. @redenchilada I was hoping to in the later future intergrate everything in to one portal. RDN, it''s forums and the services it offers all in one place, same theme, same area. But that's a long way off yet.

                      1. @mrdragon Sounds like a nice goal to shoot for, though. Honestly, just expanding StatusNet's API a bit would make so much possible. Either way, looking forward to nagging you to death to host score databases and master servers in the future :3

                        1. @redenchilada Heh.. expand the API.. someone how I feel my large goal is going to be even easier then expanding the statusnet API. Though it may be better once we upgrade, that'll happen after the move too.

                          1. @mrdragon Rather than extending the statusnet "API" I was thinking about just making a whole new API, while still maintaining support for statusnet's "API".

                              2. @mrdragon Statusnet already supports two distinct APIs, anyway: the "Twitter-compatible" one, which has the same paths, etc. as Twitter's API; and the AtomPub API, which uses Atom-formatted requests/responses, and is generally more capable, due to not limiting itself to maintaining Twitter API compatibility. Sadly, since the latter only arrived in 0.9.7, most things still use the former (including IdentiCurse, though one of my longer-term goals is to fix that).

                                1. @bitshift Anything API wise with the latest version of Statusnet?

Monday, 21-May-12 19:05:09 UTC from web
                                  1. @mrdragon As in, are there any issues? Not that I know of. There _is_ one major improvement, namely that conversation IDs are sent in the Twitter-compatible API, which allows for clients to get the full context view, like the one in the site, rather than having to follow a chain back (i.e., notice X is a reply to notice Y, so fetch notice Y, that's a reply to notice Z, so fetch notice Z, and so on), which only gives one thin strand of the full conversation.

                          2. @mrdragon Wait let me guess. Replacing StatusNet with something that works better.
