  1. Hey RDN, serious question: are cassette players retro cool, or hipster trash?

    1. @thelastgherkin They are kind of ok, I mean, they are easier to transport in like a pocket or something. So, there is that.

    2. @thelastgherkin I think they are just old like Laser disc, Reel to Reel or 8 track

      1. @vcgriffin That's less of an opinion and more of a history of storage media

      1. @awl I'm taking this as the acceptable answer

      2. @awl Well, I feel that music was much better in the 1980's than it is today. :)

Friday, 07-Aug-15 21:26:09 UTC from web
        1. @m14brony I don't know, music depends on where you look not just when.

Friday, 07-Aug-15 21:27:02 UTC from web
          1. @awl People didn't have to deal with Autotune, Meghan Trainor, etc. back then. :P There is also some fine music whose composition predates recorded music. :)

            1. @m14brony There has been bubblegum pop for as long as popular music has been a thing, people just don't look back on that kind of stuff en masse because it's the kind of music that's built to be instant, catchy, and disposable. It's not like all of a sudden one-hit-wonder pop idols became a thing in the past decade, and it's not like there still aren't talented musicians and composers making music. As for great compositions that predate recorded music, that's definitely true but I think the point @awl was trying to make is that no specific period has a monopoly on what we can consider "good" music, it comes down to the taste of whoever's listening and where they are looking to find their music. People approach music, like any other art form, with their own prior experiences and priorities, so one person might take away something positive from a piece that another might abhor. Not everyone is necessary "dealing" with popular artists either, in fact most people are enjoying them!

              1. @northernnarwhal I love how you combated this misconception. And, Bubblegum Pop... I got a very pink image in my head and I dun liek it.

                1. @metaltao Oh darn, I love pink!

                  1. @northernnarwhal As a pink connoisseur, I second that.

              2. @northernnarwhal This is a straw man. In addition to simply stating that I preferred older music to what predominates today, I was implying that even "bubblegum" music of the past wasn't a musical equivalent to Damien Hirst (the reaction to a lack of using one's own vocal talent doesn't get the scorn Milli Vanilli got in the past).

                1. @m14brony Not really a straw man as you clearly stated your distaste with cleanly produced bubblegum pop, but semantics and shouting fallacies won't get us anywhere so whatever. Also, are you seriously equating lip-synching to someone else's voice to audio pitch correction software? Sorry, I'm not having that discussion.

                  1. @northernnarwhal Another straw man fallacy. Singers like Meghan Trainir were specifically listed when it came to the main target if my criticism. The original post broadly stated that I prefer older music to what predominates today. I understand that talent and serious effort are/were held by people who make music that isn't my "type." You aren't obligated to reply, but you aren't actually offering a rebuttal to what I actually said.

    5. @thelastgherkin I think they are too mainstream to be hipster trash. MiniDisc is more a hipster thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc Back then my music teacher used them to play some music and record stuff and he was a total audiophile hipster.
