  1. I have no idea what this test in Economics today is covering. Here goes nothing !!!

    1. @redenchilada I did that once. I scored 3% and quite literally ruined my life in the process. Good luck.

      1. @ceruleanspark thank you for the encouragement

        1. @redenchilada I don't think you realize the extent to which "Don't turn out like me" is the strongest of all possible encouragements.

      2. @ceruleanspark Are those tests really that important ovr there?

        1. @nerthos My college had the bright idea that they could claim 100% of their students passed all their exams by expelling everyone who failed. They kicked out fully 60% of the year, including me.

          1. @ceruleanspark ...Wow. Do the laws of your country even allow that? That place SUCKS.

            1. @nerthos @pony The school was part of a decade old experimental program that allowed schools greater autonomy in their day to day running in exchange for having to fund themselves through private sources. Part of that manifested itself as being able to pick and choose what students it wanted, rather than following the "You must take students if you have places for them unless you are some kind of religious institute" rule regular british schools follow.

              2. @ceruleanspark oh interesting. Although my private institution has great standards and a gleaming reputation, I feel like I got more per semester out of my public education in some ways.

                1. @pony My secondary school career (at the same place) was, if I do say so myself, pretty spectacular, however, learn by rote and following extremely rigid instructions and timetables completely failed to academically prepare me for college, so, basking in my newfound "freedom", I didn't pull my weight (because I didn't understand that I had to) and got kicked out. It was only when I went back to university through my employer that I really started to grasp the concept of "Student directed learning"

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 14:49:36 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                  1. @ceruleanspark The teachers at my university now are evaluated by the students twice per semester. Usually they also take a pay cut just to teach at BYU because it's affiliated with a religious institution in which they believe and the community here is desirable in other ways. Only the best teachers stick around so we usually have an advantage that way, but student directed learning still seems like a cop-out to me.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 14:56:53 UTC from web
                    1. @pony Our teachers weren't bad teachers (in fact, because pay was so far above UK teacher average, they were all pretty good), they were just in a bad structure. They could all impart knowledge in an effective and engaging manner, but the priority was "Teach to the test" and "Help students write coursework guaranteed to get A grades" rather than actually putting in a good foundation for learning. Once they actually tried to hypnotise us. That was weird.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 15:00:16 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                      1. @ceruleanspark hah! xD well it's not too weird maybe when you consider that many of my classes begin with a prayer. The system hampers effective learning terribly.

                        2. @pony Prayer isn't that weird. Besides, you probably have to at least pretend to follow that belief structure to be entitled to a place. Literally sitting your students down in ranks and trying to hypnotically suggest compliance with staff is extremely sketchy and probably illegal. Man I should have recorded that. I should see if anyone else I went to school with remembers that.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 15:06:20 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                          1. @ceruleanspark I hope they at least explained the principles and theories behind hypnotism to the students or it would really be weird and probably unethical. It's true, we all have a firm grasp of why we pray here.

                                  1. @ceruleanspark all of society appears to be mind control ^_^ # And as a bonus, if you don't have your own faith, BYU requires you to attend our churches weekly. Either way you've got to have an endorsement form filled out by your local religious leader yearly.

                                      1. @ceruleanspark @nerthos there's a good percentage of the population that are other faiths or don't claim any particular religion. Apparently they get by just fine. xD I've heard stories both bad and good about getting along in strong LDS communities. On the one hand, we're mostly very kind and hospitable people, but on the other, we're often very absorbed in our own families and church activities, so, if you're not interested in our religion sometimes members of our church make the mistake of making you feel excluded. http://www.utah-faiths.org/pluralism/utah_religious_statistics.htm

                                        1. @ceruleanspark @nerthos and frankly, sometimes ponies of any culture are just plain prejudiced. Fortunately our faith looks down on prejudice officially, but not everypony is a good member of the church.

                                          1. @nerthos There was a Star Trek episode in which Picard said LDS instead of LSD iirc. If was a funny mistake. (BTW, LDS=Latter-day Saint, short for a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, unofficially aka. "Mormons")

                                              1. @nerthos yeah. our church only recently gained a combined membership outside of the U.S. to exceed that within (in 2002 I think?).

                                                1. @pony Well, the pillars of the faith are too USA centered, so it will never become a big thing outside that place.

                                                  1. @nerthos that was true until recently. It's been the intention of the church to change that. Of course, we go in the front door no matter what, so places like China, for instance, are closed to us still.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 15:58:26 UTC from web
                                                  2. @nerthos early last decade the first non US. apostle was called for example, and our existing apostles were sent to live outside the US.

                                                    1. @pony only a couple were sent outside the US though. It's a gradual process at the moment from what I can tell.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 16:01:20 UTC from web
                                                    2. @pony I don't see the appeal in joining an organized faith. Whilst I do believe in the existance of an all-encompassing, powerful entity, I will not follow the commands or doctrines of mortals who say they speak in behalf of god. I find that concept laughable. And in any case, as a man who actively seeks to assimilate and replace god, I wouldn't fit in a church.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 16:04:08 UTC from web
                                                      1. @nerthos If a god showed up in front of me, explained to me his dotrines, and asked me to follow him, that would be a completely different thing.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 16:06:01 UTC from web

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 16:06:23 UTC from web
                                                      2. @nerthos I might feel similarly if it weren't for personal revelation. We're each encouraged to know God personally and receive answers for ourselves from him. The church is here to help guide and provide ordinances by those with authority from Christ. Our ultimate goal is to become one with God and create our own worlds without number (if that's your cup of tea).

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 16:08:25 UTC from web
                                                        1. @pony Oh and bear in mind that we believe we maintain our individuality and obtain immortal bodies

                                                        2. @pony It's a similar objecive to mine, yeah, but in a lesser tier to put it simple. Thing is, phrases like "The church is here to help guide and provide ordinances by those with authority from Christ" are what keep me from joining one of those churches. Also Christ is by no means my favourite biblical figure. I wouldn't follow a guy who with unlimited power allowed himself to be killed.
