      • In the current political climate, having an ideology the mainstream population doesn't like means you have no legal rights, which is absolutely ridiculous. People like to talk about how progressive the world is lately, but the only thing I see it progressing towards is the IX century.

about 9 hours ago from web
              • For example there's been this story all over the news about a fight in a club. During a costume party a few highschool kids from a german school went dressed as hitlers, and this bunch of jew kids from a jew schol took offense to that and went to demand that the other group were kicked out. Of course the managers weren't idiots and just told the kids to remove the 'stache and swastika, which they did. The jew kids weren't happy they didn't get their way though and went and started a fight with the first group which got them both kicked out of the club. So far it's all fine, but the issue is that the media has gone through great effort to blame the hitler guys for the whole thing, even though they're 17 years old, an age where everyone is edgy, they complied with the club's request of removing the costume, and were attacked by the jew group. This could somewhat be excused if it happened in say, germany? but over here, in a country that had no involvement in WWII other than taking (cont)

                • @nerthos refugees from both sides, and had absolutely NO issues with germany regardless of the political climate of the time over there, this paranoid hunt for "offensive" ideas and obsession with ruining people for saying or doing something a certain group doesn't like is inexcusable. This kind of fight should stay out of the place since it has nothing to do with the country, and if a certain community doesn't like it they can go back to their own country.

                • @nerthos In fact Israel has shed far more blood on Argentinian soil than the nazis ever did, between the nazi hunters they sent on the second half of the XX century to literally hunt war refugees on another, uninvolved continent; to the biggest terrorist attack in the country's history being a fight between Iran and Israel having nothing to do with Argentina an still taking local lives.

              • British PM to trigger #Brexit without vote by lawmakers | Reuters

British Prime Minister Theresa May will not hold a parliamentary vote on Brexit before formally triggering Britain's withdrawal from the European Union, The Daily Telegraph reported on Saturday, without specifying sources.

May will not offer opponents the chance to stall the withdrawal and has consulted lawyers who say she has the power to invoke the exit without a parliamentary vote, the conservative newspaper said. A majority of the 650 lawmakers had declared themselves "Remainers".

Opponents maintain that since the EU referendum result is not legally binding, elected lawmakers should review the vote before the process is started.

                http://www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-eu-may-idUSKCN1120AK

Sounds logical. I mean, the biggest decision the UK could probably make, pushed through by a popular vote which was basically almost 50/50, and the Leave campaign basically won because young people couldn't be arsed to vote?

And the elected government will not even be consulted? How much more fail can you have?

                • @tiffany Well, let it serve as a remainder of how democracy works. Everyone has to be /very/ careful with even the smallest decision, or you can be sure it'll end up badly. It'll never get to anything other than bad results until the majority of people able to vote are both smart and educated.

about 10 hours ago in context
                • @nerthos Yeah, if nothing else people (myself included) are more educated and politically charged. I'm hoping that 2016 is just kind of an outlier as far as godawful years go but it also kinda seems like it'll get progressively worse in the same way a TV drama has worse protagonists every season

about 10 hours ago in context
                • @tiffany Well, we're entering a cultural dark age if you pay attention. The causes are different depending on who you ask, but most will agree something is going really wrong. In my opinion it's the revisionism and the whole "if your opinion is not progressive/mainstream you're a bigot!" to the point that people can outright lose their careers for expressing an unpopular opinion, and things like skeleton differences between races are omitted from books for being considered racist. Political correctness over factual and scientific truth. Others will surely have a different opinion in regards to the cause, as I'm sure will include you, but most will agree that we're going down the drain. It does make sense though after a period of unparalelled advancement like we had from the renaissance to the XX century. One of the evident symptoms is the fact that few realize just how badly they're getting screwed with this idea of democracy, and how many politicians have figured out how to abuse it.

              • I don't particularly care about race or sexual orientation issues, as far as I'm concerned everyone can have whatever opinion they want on these topics from full support to hatred, as long as they don't take it to a physical level and start making pogroms and refusing service in businesses. But I do have very strong opinions on how democracy is abused and how idiots cause good people to be at the mercy of whatever ill intentioned hypocrite is in power at the time, so I can sympathize with that feeling of being screwed.

                • At least Trump supporters can pretend they're voting for economic reasons or something like that. People who support Nigel Farage have basically zero excuse for being a bigoted piece of garbage; he's far too candid about his hatred of other races and the LGBT community. I wasn't a very political person when Thatcher died and so I was critical of the people who were happy about it, but I wouldn't hesitate to kick Farage off a wobbly stool.

about 10 hours ago from web
                  • @tiffany Thatcher was one of the main reasons work conditions in the UK are so horrible today so it comes as no surprise people would hate her. Her policies negatively impacted the majority of the population. This Nigel guy will be more polarizing because his ideas only impact a portion of it, so it comes down to political and moral ideology rather than the living conditions of the entire middle and low class.
