The fact that so many books still name Boku no Pico as “the greatest or most significant or most influential” anime ever only tells you how far anime still is from becoming a serious art. Cartoon critics have long recognized that the greatest cartoon of all time is Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, which was not the most famous or richest or best seller of its time, let alone of all times. Web animation critics rank the highly controversial MLB2 over classical animators who were highly popular in courts around YouTube. Anime critics are still blinded by commercial success. Boku no Pico sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore it must have been the greatest. Cartoon critics grew up watching a lot of cartoons of the past, web animation critics grow up watching a lot of web animations of the past. Anime critics are often totally ignorant of anime of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Boku did anything worthy of being saved.

@spots One of the fundamental principles of contemporary Buddhism is The Four Noble Truths, which in turn are centered around the concept of Dukkha, which can be described as human suffering. The acknowledgement of Dukkha (sometimes referred to as The Truth of Dukkha) is the first of the aforementioned Noble Truths, and states both that all things tangible are temporary (as illustrated through mandalas) but also that all things temporary are unsatisfactory, and that our existence by nature is therefore suffering. (of course, Buddhism is not a nihilistic religion, as its goal is to ultimately end human suffering, but the acknowledgement of intrinsic suffering is an important principle to the religion).
