  1. !movies - "The Descendants." Pretty melancholy for a comedy, especially one set in Hawaii. Guess that's what a comedy/drama is, though, regardless of setting. It's basically the story of an already-fractured family dealing with the type of blows that could drive them apart forever. George Clooney really carried the majority of the film, but that's probably because he had the most screen time. Shailene Woodley did a fantastic job as his eldest daughter, and Matthew Lillard had a surprising role as someone who couldn't be described as "wacky," "loveable," or "energetic." Back to Clooney, I think that the most impactful moments were the silences and pauses, especially just before a line or an action; it gives you time to wonder what's going on inside and really come to empathize with him. Probably not a movie I, personally, would buy; I'm still giving it an A-.

  2. !movies "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows." If you liked the first one, you were probably, like me, pleasantly surprised by how well Robert Downey, Jr. played the detective. He keeps it up very well in this one. The chemistry and dynamic between Downey and Jude Law is nonstop, rapid-fire, and alternately hilarious and touching (no homo). Jared Harris made a great Moriarty, brilliant and subtly insane. The plot was not too convoluted; like a proper Holmes story, hard to predict but not hard to follow. In the first "Sherlock Holmes," there was a mechanic in fight scenes which is also used here (and improved, and played with, and all around brilliantly used). The cinematography did a great job of conveying the subjective perceptions of the different characters. Finally, if you're familiar with the original writings, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised at a certain twist which I won't give away (unless you have Holmsian perception). I dug it, B+. Would see again.

  4. !movies - "J. Edgar" - I'm no historian, so I can't say whether or not this was faithful or accurate or anything. I will, however, say that it was amazing. The story of an entire nation's fears and conflicts represented by a few men and women (and at many times only one man) was inspiring and horrifying to watch. "J. Edgar" was as much a story of one man's life as it was a story of a nation's development over several generations, of the struggle to remain free while also being under protection, and of the cost that some men choose to bear for the good of all. Beautifully filmed, marvelously acted by all parties involved, every inch a technical and artistic masterpiece. A+ with no reservations.

  6. !movies - "The Muppets" - I'm not gonna lie, RDN. This is the most fun I've ever had in a dark room with my family. <.< But seriously. I loved everything about this movie. The Muppets themselves were in amazing form, the humans were completely worthy of their place alongside such greats, and the celebrity cameos were perfectly placed highlights of giddiness. The story itself is pretty straightforward and uncomplicated, and really serves to give us a good dose of Muppet mayhem. It was heartwarming, nostalgic, hilarious, and had a couple of pony-worthy Aesops handled in a beautifully not-heavyhanded manner. And it had a Toy Story short beforehand! :D There's no reason not to see this movie. Total A.

  7. !movies - "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas." They're the new Cheech & Chong. You know what you're in for, c'mon. Really. I had a blast, I'll give it an A-. I also love stoner comedies and was, at the time, chemically altered. Your mileage may vary.

  8. !movies - "Jumper" - Started halfway through, so I can't really review it. But I just want to say the protagonists are Slasher Movie Stupid. Like, whoa. Like, drinking a skull & crossbones bottle thinking it's "pirate juice" stupid. I mean, how do they dress themselves level stupid. A team of the first-to-dies in slasher flicks could take these guys out (and Jumpers are superhumans). They make Forrest Gump look like Marilyn Vos Savant. So. Flipping. Stupid.

  9. !movies - "The Thing" (2011) - Prequel, not a remake, of John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982). However, don't think that just because you've seen JCTT you know how the new one will end. The plot is the same - there's an alien in Antarctica. The story, however, is significantly different, and it does a fair bit to expand the story of the two films together. JCTT focused more on paranoia and what lurks in the dark, whereas 2011's did have some good paranoia moments, but broke out into Action scenes much more frequently. The Thing itself was wonderfully well done when it appeared, and it had some really neat tricks up its metamorphic sleeves. One thing I appreciated was that the "split the party" moments had a darn good reason to happen, as opposed to stupid teen slasher flicks. Overall, though, it wasn't a necessary film and I still like JCTT better, but this was still good for what it was. B+

  10. !movies - "50/50" - I guess the first thing to get out of the way is that this is not just a movie about guys trying to score sympathy sex because of cancer. It is part of it, but actually a small one. The rest is a general story of cancer, the people who have it, and the people who love them. Everybody did such a really good job (especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt), but at the end of it Seth Rogen was really just playing a toned-down version of everyone he always plays, and Anna Kendrick felt like she was pulling out the same character she'd played in "Up in the Air." That said, I did enjoy it, and it wasn't lacking anything - it just didn't really do anything above-and-beyond. I just wanted lo like it even more. B- or so.

  11. !movies I just realized I have no interest in "Happy Feet 2." A movie about penguins (favorite animal, here) and I don't want to see it. They really messed up the first one. =/

  13. !movies - So I'm one of *those* guys who typically says that "the original was better." I've even talked about opening an independent theater and showing the original versions of movies whenever a remake is released. And yet, I can't make myself get mad about the American version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." It's got Daniel Craig! And it's directed by David Fincher!! #

  14. @tenmihara "Paranormal Activity 3" - I think I liked this one best of the series so far. A great job with atmosphere and mood, and a number of creative scares (especially considering the fact that the entity in question can only do, like, three basic tricks). As for the scares, they're mostly of the AUGH!-YOU-JUMP-NOW variety, but they do make you jump - their timing is impeccable. As for the story, it made me kind of wish I'd watched the first two again so I'd be back up to speed; but, I saw it on a whim, so no chance there. I would say it integrated into the overall story of the franchise better than PA 2 did. I'd say they've got one more possible film in the franchise (which would take place after PA 1, since 2 & 3 were prequels) - but I can't for the life of me think of how they would continue the "characters filming themselves" theme. Overall, I'll call it a B-minus. !movies

  15. !movies - "Dream House." # - If you're interested in seeing the movie, don't watch the trailer. (Oops) The trailer doesn't ruin everything, just a large point in the story, which I liked despite knowing half of. Outside that, I liked Daniel Craig as a bit more awkward and unsure than his Bond roles, and the two little girls were cute as a button. I'd give it maybe a B- or so.

  16. !movies - "Buried" was intense. And depressing. Also, it had a LOT of people providing voice work. And it is seriously 90 minutes with Ryan Reynolds in a box. It's almost like a radio drama.

  17. It's kinda funny. Spidey's murdock disco strut was one of the scenes in the trailer that made me take four years to watch the movie, but within the movie it was one of the better-done and more logical scenes. Not a good scene, but better than a lot of the other ones. !movies

  19. !movies - "Apollo 18" was basically "Paranormal Activity" but in SPAACE!! When they mentioned they were landing at the south pole, I figured they'd meet penguins in SPAACE!! Then the camera-glitch trope kicked in, and I thought it was Slenderman in SPAACE!! But seriously - nice, taught, claustrophobic piece of paranoid horror. Also, I was the only person in the theater. #

  25. !movies "Conan" - I want to eat ten pounds of meat and kill a man with my bare hands. It was a rush, and a definite bonus to see Conan played as more than "Sword. Loincloth. Blood." A few meh moments, overall a blood-soaked thrill. 3D's not worth it.

  27. !movies "Rise of The Planet of The Apes" was amazing. Emotionally rich, great performances. Solid script. Deep, foreboding sense of horror. And credits that read like every Robert Zemekis film combined. Special note - we're really starting to cross the Uncanny Valley with these VFX. And, of course, lovely references and tie-ins to the original.
