  1. @trixie yes, it's called 'pizzicato': plucking the strings with your fingers. If you listen to the intro of - for example - Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbzxhZT6akk&list=PLDCC6BDCAF4AD95D5) you can hear the cellos and double base doing this pizzicato just before the violins and violas start a melody.

  2. @ceruleanspark If I may post links: www.rda.org.uk. In my case the children are special needs pupils (e.g. diagnosed with ADHD, ADD, autism, etc.) of a local school. I also have heard of such lessons for adults, but I think one has to go via the local health trust to see whether there is funding and a place available.

  5. Last 'summer' I went to the ISAZ (International Society for Anthrozoology) Conference in Cambridge to do a presentation on child-animal relations and interactions. The organisation uploaded most presentations to youtube, and here is mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9FNjExLqMuw I hope you like the shirt :p

  6. @hakupony My university just has been elected Times Education University of the year. My Department has been awarded the highest ranking ('excellent') in all of its main disciplines in the most recent HEFCE Teaching Quality Assessements. We have a close link with ICOSS (http://sheffield.ac.uk/icoss) and we have our own research centre for childhood studies (http://www.cscy.group.shef.ac.uk). And even with this kind of reputation there's no funding available.

  7. @hakupony The state funds research via research councils, such as the ESRC (http://www.esrc.ac.uk). Yet, with budget cuts everywhere, those councils get less funding. Moreover, social sciences are intangible: e.g. as engineer I could construct a bridge to improve traffic flow. People see the bridge being built and then see the surplus value of funding engineering research. But social sciences are like medical sciences: you work to prevent something and it's intangible. People understand that of medica but not of sociologists. I cannot prove that e.g. my research on social cohesion prevents the London riots from happening again. The only thing people see is that money is spent on something 'vague', and the government that provided tax money for such projects will be voted out. So even when researchers are paid by the state you still depend on the political will to invest in your research topics.

  8. @comradeconventrix Officially I'm doing 'Sociological Studies' in Sheffield (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk) but because my research focused on children's perceptions and experiences of living in rural areas I usually say childhood sociology. Anyway, what is it you want to know? If I can help you... :-)

  9. Later today I'll head down south to Cambridge for the Anthrozoology Conference (http://www.isaz21012.com) where I'll present a bit of my PhD thesis. Talking about anthropomorphizing non-human animals I even managed to add some images of Twilight and Applejack in my presentation :-) It will be part of my farewell to academia tour; I love to do research, but because of a lack of funding I see not much of a future there for me. Besides, I'm hoping to move towards more equine-related jobs. P.S. I hope you all like my new profile background :-)

  13. !yorkshirebronies @trister With RDN you mean the network or the forum? (http://forums.rainbowdash.com/index.php) because on that forum there hasn't been a notification whatsoever... Ah well, I guess that's the price I'm paying for being one of the marginal people instead of part of the incrowd :p

  15. @purplephish20 Well, I don't know that many people here at university: doing a PhD is a lonely existence. What do we need the base for? If it is accommodation, then over the summer you might want to try your luck with the Accommodation Services (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation). If it is for having a room to watch episodes... Perhaps http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/acs is an option. I do know Sheffield University has its own Anime Society (http://sheffield.ac.uk/union/get-involved/societies/anime-sheffield) and they often have Screenings. I happen to meet one of their members regularly on the bus coming back from orchestra, so I might get some info. When can we expect the lot of you invading Sheffield? Finally, I don't know anybody at Sheffield Hallam (www.shu.ac.uk), but it's an option when Sheffield University is unavailable.

  16. And after 50-odd hours work I present a new PMV. This time it's classical music: Vaughan Williams' 'The Lark Ascending' has become 'The Pegasus Ascending'. As the description states, I decided to chuck in a bit of Vivaldi: instead of following Meredith's poem I tried to describe Equestria through the seasons. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and feel free to share it :-) What? Ah yes, the URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_LTV3Wiq8E

  17. For anypony who is in Sheffield tomorrow (March 10), here is an invitation for my concert: The Sheffield Philharmonic will perform Violin Concerto (Brahms), Norfolk Rhapsody (Vaughan Williams) and Borodin's 2nd symphony. Location: Victoria Hall Methodist Church (right next to the Crucible). Time: 19:30 (that's 7.30pm...). See also http://www.sheffieldphilharmonic.org.uk/performances/1/8-spring-concert. I'll be somewhere in the cello section, and hopefully I can show I'm am good enough to do a duet with Octavia one day. Looking forward to Borodin: quite fast and difficult, but there are some parts - doing all down bowing - that make me think of Pinkie's state of mind between the last chocolate rain and defeating Discord: bring it on!

  19. @purplephish20 !yorkshire Still completely groggy from the train back - why the heating was on maximum.... blergh - it was a nice surprise to be tapped on the shoulder at Sheffield station. I want to thank you all for a great day and taking my mind off the study for the day. Bowling was fun, although I know for sure I wouldn't have done so great without the barriers in place haha. And, as you requested, here are links to 2 of 4 of my PMVs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl8pvK0iXwE http://www.archive.org/details/Pmv-Tusk

  25. !midlands And as promised during last Saturday's meet-up: the link of my newest PMV. I uploaded it last night. So, enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnoEPsufsXQ btw, I also saw the French versions of 'Winter Wrap Up' and 'At the Gala'. I love those, especially Twilight's French singing voice. But then again, I might be a bit biased :-)

  26. !midlands What is a visit to Sheffield without seeing a fight? Well.... Should I be ashamed to say that's the city I live in? Anyway, it is true that Sheffield is quite the green city, but that's because part of it stretches out towards the Peak District. The meetup was wonderful, have to go to more meetups. And do some studying in between for the quiz. Or some training for laser quest? Nah, I'd rather remain a pacifist :-) Thanks all for showing up. For those interested here's the URL to my first PMV 'Twilight's Kosmos': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl8pvK0iXwE
