  1. I find it ironic that the open-source community tends to be so close-minded on what they consider acceptable.

    1. @redenchilada Well a lot of the open source community is smart and not mind-numbingly dumb like the average user. :P #

    2. @redenchilada At the same time, the closed-source community treats the open-source community equally terrible. We all just need to gather around with a cup of tea and talk this out. Even Richard Stallman doesn't think Steam is pure evil, so there must be a way we can come to a good conclusion.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:36:12 UTC from web
      1. @omni In conclusion: stubborn people don't accept differing views. It goes both ways.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:37:40 UTC from web
        1. @redenchilada Exactly.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:40:11 UTC from web
      2. @omni I would argue that the closed source community, as far as such a thing could be said to exist treats the open-source community the way it does because of comments like "Well a lot of the open source community is smart and not mind-numbingly dumb like the average user."

        1. @ceruleanspark Both sides are just negatively reacting to each other, really, but I have no clue which side was first, though I would think the closed-source community started existing later, when Bill Gates wrote an angry letter to some people sharing his source code with others and talking about how you need to be able to make a living with software. Then again, this came from a Linux documentary so it may be horribly biased. Long story short: Both sides are doing it wrong and need to calm down, we can't really blame only one side here.

          1. @omni To be honest, both groups are pretty horrible to themselves internally too. I've been called stupid for asking for help on just as many OSS mailing lists and message boards as I have on closed ones.

            1. @ceruleanspark True, true. In the Linux community we often have a tendency to look down on Ubuntu users, for example. It could surely be better, yeah :x

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:43:12 UTC from web
        2. @ceruleanspark I say that because it is so hard for MOST people I know to do simple things like get a picture off your phone. That is why. and I tend to go overboard when I rant about stuff I find annoying.

          1. @rainbowhurricane But you're insinuating false cause and effect. Supporting open-source does not cause one to be smarter.

            1. @redenchilada okay you got me there.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:43:18 UTC from web
          2. @rainbowhurricane You are making the mistake of confusing domain specific knowledge with general intelligence. Plenty of people who can run mathematical rings around me ask me for help with their computer problems.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:43:50 UTC from web
            1. @ceruleanspark Oh I see what you mean.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:45:16 UTC from web
            2. @ceruleanspark So what you're saying is, even if someone seems ignorant and or stupid at something, they could be very proficient at something else? Is that what you're saying?

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:48:01 UTC from web
              1. @rainbowhurricane I believe that's it. I can't draw or do a zillion other things, but I'm fairly good with computers.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:48:31 UTC from web
                1. @omni I can't draw either, but I'm really good with computers. :D

                  1. @rainbowhurricane Well, I assume you use Linux, heh? Which distribution?

                    1. @omni Yes, yes I do. :)

                    2. @omni Lubuntu, and sometimes fedora. mostly Xfce based distributions. Because I don't like the new Gnome.

                      1. @rainbowhurricane I personally love the design of the new GNOME, but I wish it was easier to configure.

                        2. @omni That's why I hate Gnome 3, not enough configuration options. It seemed like they were going for newbies, but that's just my opinion. :)

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:55:49 UTC from web
                          1. @rainbowhurricane Well, you can actually configure quite a lot. gnome-tweak-tool helps, but GNOME has this weird and utterly confusing windows-like registry-like thingy in which it saves all its settings which are hard as hell to set. It's one of those "by oversimplifying everything is made difficult" things.

                    4. @redenchilada I mean, it's hardly rocket science. OH WAIT

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:53:40 UTC from web
                  2. @omni Look up theory of multiple intelligences. A couple weeks ago I was discussing that with some important neurobiologist or something like that, at a conference on the matter.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:54:45 UTC from web
              3. @rainbowhurricane Precisely that. I'm no more stupid for not knowing how to rebuild my car engine than my mechanic is for not being able to compile his own software.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:50:18 UTC from web
      3. @omni We could always choose two champions and have a duel to settle this matter.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:40:27 UTC from web
        1. @gladosenchilada But Richard Stallman isn't the fighting type. "Fighting is wrong, we need to be more respectful with each other." is something I would see him say (even though I don't think he ever literally said that).

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:41:46 UTC from web
          1. @omni Then he's not going to live enough to see the end of the conflict.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:43:11 UTC from web
            1. @gladosenchilada If one of your points is to stop violence hitting people is the most stupid thing you can do. Richard Stallman may be a calm guy, but he's surely not a stupid person. If anything, I often find his statements to be quite smart.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:44:13 UTC from web
              1. @omni I don't know who he is, but a duel is not free violence. It's a fight with regulated rules and honor, much like boxing or martial arts encounters.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:45:48 UTC from web
                1. @gladosenchilada And you hardly see anyone fight with honour anymore, sad face

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:46:50 UTC from web
                  1. @mrdragon Yeah, few true men remain. If you want a fair fight you need a third party guy with a gun acting as a referee.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:48:00 UTC from web
                2. @gladosenchilada Still, if you think violence is wrong you're being a hypocrit for fighting, and he just doesn't seem like the type that would approve of any violence. Richard Stallman is the founder of the Free Software Foundation and one of the main contributors to the GNU/Linux. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:48:06 UTC from web
                  1. @omni I stand by my words. A duel would solve everything.

                    1. @gladosenchilada Okay, listen. If you don't agree to me that we shouldn't fight I'm going to beat you up soon. Got it?

                            1. @gladosenchilada Dude, I have you tied. You couldn't use your hands to grab that. At any rate, I'm going to do movie nonsense by grabbing a gun out of a hat I wasn't wearing until a moment ago and shooting you in the leg because that's the most useless place to shoot someone.

Sunday, 04-Nov-12 20:54:42 UTC from web
                              1. @omni I don't need my hands to fire the belt gun. It's hip-operated.
