@eaglehooves Yeah, when devices are explicitly intended to be secure (such as many Thinkpads), they tend to spend the extra to use nonpowered storage for exactly that reason.

@eaglehooves My secondary school used to use I-Gear. Goddamn, I used to run rings around that thing. Then they went and got some fancy sophos deep packet inspector thing and that was the end of that.

@eaglehooves I suspect the filters are actually OK, but the school implementations are always a mess of edge cases and certain groups requiring special treatment etc. Can't block sex terms for biology classes, can't block drugs or violence without messing up health or history classes, can't block weird occult stuff wthout messing up religious education and so on.
