  3. The backpack I'm using for over 15 years is still holding well enough but I feel like I've grown out of it. It was fine for a good while but my use-case has shifted dramatically. Nowadays I use it for holding all my bike stuff and for some emergency storage whenever my shopped items don't fit in my bags. The stuff I have in my backpack right now gets more in the way lately because the items are oddly shaped for the compartments they are. A poncho, umbrella, small first-aid kit, repair tools, hand pump, tote bags, paper tissues, N95-masks, pens. I wish I could sew one myself.

    • @awl I use my backpack almost exclusively when I use my bike. So my needs are pretty much the same all the time. On good weather days I don't need to carry an umbrella or poncho but they will be definitely not there when I actually need them if I don't have it always packed. I hope I don't overpack. I was once thinking about carrying a set of new chain and hoses but these might be overkill as I would need more time to fix that than to push the bike back home.

    • @adiwan hydraulic brakes? If so man that’s kind of higher end

about 6 months ago in context
    • @awl I just have good ol' ordinary rim brakes that are attached to a bowden tube. Also my hub gearing brakes when backpedaling.

  8. Life lesson: It's easier to solder two stacking PCBs together via pins than to remove all that solder to disassemble. I got a new solder sucker and it sucks. I mean it is not very good. That solder sucker is an iFixit solder sucker and i'd give it a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars. The nozzle is way too big for 2.54mm pitched pins and the suction action itself is a little bit too weak.

  15. Crazy idea: A bed that is basically a bean bag, except the outer layer is airtight. When laying on the bed the body sinks in and with an applied vacuum to the bean bag the sleeping position gets fixed. I don't know how comfortable or uncomfortable this might be but at least it prevents contorting oneself into a painful position. I cannot count how many times I slept in a way that made my back hurt or pinched a nerve or even restricted blood flow to my arms.

    • @scribus Eventually we, as a society, will end up in a dystopia that is Demolition Man before cryosleep will be possible. I had a discussion with a friend about cryosleep. He says if all the cell tissue problems are solved that come with cryosleep then cryosleep won't be necessary. It means that if a method exists that repairs or reverses all the damage that cryosleep induces then there is a method for making a person live forever and thus making cryosleep not necessary.

about 10 months ago in context
    • @adiwan There have been huge developments in aging reversal and prevention these last few months actually, working off potential treatments for premature aging disease they discovered what part of the organism codes the timeframes for aging, and they can be modified to force the body to slow or reverse it, thus greatly extending the "good years"
Current testing is on organisms affected by the disease originally investigated.

  17. I think it's probably time to be honest about this: I have neither the time, nor the motivation to work on this place anymore. There's stuff going on in my personal life I'd rather not get into, so in short: I'm probably going to finally turn this place off in the next few months. If you're interested in taking ownership, let me know, but know that I'd only be comfortable handing it off to someone I know and trust, rather than any rando that shows up.

    • @ceruleanspark Thanks for all the memories, this site was a core part of my adolescence. Found it early in high school right as I was becoming my own self and still think fondly of it even if I haven't regularly used it in a decade. It's always been nice to pop in and see familiar names. If anyone wants to keep up post RDN my Steam and FB links are in my profile. I wish everyone the best in life!

    • @ceruleanspark Thanks for all the hard work over the years. This was a fun place to hang out when I was but a friendless kiddo dealing with middle school angst- don't know how I could have stood it without. Hope all will be well; if not now, then in the future.

  24. So. I was in a very bad car crash a a few months ago. Hit from two sides. Highway speed. Now insurance and law are sniffing at me with hunger no doubt, and medical is listing me with a hundred and one reasons why I can't be a functional adult, but my lack of injuries and lack of symptoms are making it worse, since I can't safely get any kind of long term income cause im not injured but the medical file bars me from working or driving. My only hope is loopholes in laws and maybe some good graces of those that dont care to sign off on me for the odd thing. But I bananaed off a higher power.

    • @adiwan Thank you. I never cared about life direction. But I knew how to handle my life. Now I was scared for a long time since I had rights and independence medically stripped from me on doctors orders. My future feels dead. My career probably is too. There is a slow path that might get my some rights back. But is that enough to be free? Idk. And easily undone if a doctor comes up with a new condition to give me. My only breaking point is just ignoring the medical and thus law to rebuild my life. Worst case I will lose what I already lost. Freedom.

  30. OK.... Tears of the Kingdom... What does "tears" refer to? Is it the liquid coming out of the eyes (for example while crying) or is it the edge of two pieces of a material/object that has been ripped apart (for example tearing a piece of paper in two pieces)?
