  1. Why do I have this feeling that everything here will end up bleeding into the paper I have to write tomorrow? urgg... I have to argue that 'hope' is important to, and can affect the survival and actions of humans... Now... I'm sure that whatever arguments I make will be good, but I'm pretty sure the teacher is not expecting, nor wants, a paper as long or complicated as the one I will no doubt produce...

  2. @toksyuryel In the things that are not dependent on your understanding. Things that can and have been observed by numerous others and accepted as universal fact. Not to say that all theories about dinosaurs never existing are false, but simply that the fossils ARE here, and we can observe them, and based on our current collective understanding of the universe, they can be used to confirm the concept of time.

  3. @pony your current understanding of your memories is subject to the memories themselves. Unless you are able to accurately cross reference your memories with those of every other relevant person, it is possible that what you remember never happened.

  4. @toksyuryel I have actually seen that interview. :)

  5. @pony Good point. We automatically fill in the blanks with content based on our personal experiences. And by opening ourselves up to alternate options, we gain more accurate content with which to fill the blanks... In fact... Following this, wouldn't we just continue to add additional information to our repository of things to fill blanks with until eventually we had gathered enough additional understanding so as to fully and accurately full the blank? so... All knowledge is good knowledge, and the more of it we gather the more accurate our understandings will be...

  6. @toksyuryel Ah yess.... Neil deGrasse Tyson.. fun fun fun. I would try to make excuses for not having watched more of his stuff based on not having time to do so, but the fact that I am staying up late discussing this sort of thing says otherwise...

  9. @pony Yessss that is very close to how I choose to understand time... But then... Like you said... In our current state of development as a species we are focused on what is going on immediately around us, and are therefore not capable of actively observing time in the manner that you described, but we are capable of understanding it as a concept...

  11. @pony We can transfer factual information, but a substantial chunk, if not all, of knowledge is understanding gained through personal experience and the ability to apply your personality to what you know. Therefore, when you die, even if the factual information is passed on much of the meaning is lost.

  12. @aeniug2 But since we have no real facts to compare our language based descriptions to, it isn't really possible to tell whether they are misunderstandings or not, but the important thing is that we have a high enough level of understanding to grasp the idea that our understanding of concepts such as time through language can be flawed.

Sunday, 18-Mar-12 09:04:08 UTC from web in context
  13. @pony So, in essence, what your saying is that since we have no exact definition of how time works, or even if what we perceive as time is a real thing, we attempt to understand it through language, which has the potential to lead to a lot of misunderstandings?

  27. @minti yeah. and the worst part is that all the accounts are under a custom domain or something that the school pays for in order to gain administrative rights over all the accounts, and we are not allowed to change any of the personal data because it would mess up the system they set up where every account has every other account in its contacts, making the sharing of googledocs faster etc etc etc... I don't care for it one bit. If we need each other's email's, we can just ask each other......

  28. @scribus In terms of important information, your right. I would certainly be caring a lot more if I had more important stuff on google... The problem is, I don't necessarily control what google knows about me. My school made every student a gmail account without asking our permission, and filled them all out with the most accurate information they had on hand....

  29. @minti No doubt there would be some degree of... selective discrimination? will be present. IE, some adds or services being pushed down on the priority list and never seen, they could do that to entire demographics with extreme accuracy... like... right down to shoe size and food preferences...

  30. @minti the scary thing is that google has probably already released some kind of monster bot like that that lurks even now, learning from us...
