@zeldatra Flashing your phone is pretty much the only solution for that. I'm doing fine without any Google apps on my phone :P

@redenchilada I'm pretty sure most Google apps are pre-installed when you get the device, and therefore can't be uninstalled unless you flash your device (or is rooting enough? I think it is, actually).

@omni Really? I was able to uninstall some of the pre-installed apps on my phone without a root. (But then, I didn't remove much. I actually get a fair bit of use out of the Google apps.)

@redenchilada I remember not being able to uninstall Google Play, Email, Gmail and similar Google Apps from my Android phone.

@kamikaze Email doesn't even communicate with Google's servers unless you set it up with a Gmail account, and Google Play only stores your browsing history of apps within the Play store for the sake of showing you similar things that you might like. Are you really being paranoid about that?

@redenchilada Because they are proprietary apps I don't use. Mostly as a matter of experiment, I decided to try to use only Free software apps on my phone and, so far, it's going tremendously. I'm literally not missing anything except some boring games. Instead of Email (or, Gmail, which I did use), I now use K9 Mail and instead of Google Play I use F-Droid. Right now I'm in the state where everything is just working as I want, and I have no reason to install any of the Google Apps as I wouldn't even use them would I try to.

@omni I've been also getting along well. Except the OpenStreetMap apps are fairly useless.

@colfax I have a feeling you're thinking "cracker" instead of "hacker" here. Just to make sure, a hacker does not break into other systems, that's what a cracker does.

@colfax there are many definitions of the term. I prefer the definition as provided by the CCC, but the traditional definition is fine with me as well.

@kamikaze Forgive my cynicism. I just don't care for words like "hacker" being tossed around like buzzwords in a vain attempt to disprove someone's point instead of just coming out and saying why you think they're wrong.

@redenchilada I don't get what I was supposed to try dispose and how. And what do you mean with „words like hacker“? You used the word paranoia as if it was a bad thing, whereas to me it's the only sane state of mind in this world we live in. I was simply stating the conclusion that we follow incompatible schools of thinking.

@omni Almost every argument against Google, in favor of open source, etc that I've ever been exposed to has been some variant of "what if $companyName collects all of your personal information and uses it to track you to your house". It just seems ridiculous.

@redenchilada Google knows enough to make practically every single person's life a complete hell. We've reached the point where we just have to hope that Mr. Google will stay a nice guy. Also, you can't really say "Google vs. Open Source" seeing how some Google products are actually Open Source (or get donated as such if they fail to the Apache foundation or the likes). With proprietary apps, you can never be really sure what it does, though, that's all. I'm not saying Google is pure evil, otherwise we would've know it by now, but it doesn't hurt anyone to not feed them more information than you have to feed them.

@omni There are plenty of other companies that know just as much if not more about you, and they'd have a much greater motive to do something with that info. I'm not saying it's a good thing for them to do, per se, but worrying about the browsing history Google saves when half of the services in the real world you can sign up for need your home address, phone number, etc. seems a bit silly.

@redenchilada Google isn't the only company I don't trust (even though I trust Google more-than-average), I trust every company as little as I have to trust them. It would be silly to only not trust Google and just trust every other company completely.

@omni Google does throw on a friendlier face than most other companies. A portion of its profits even go towards cancer research.

@mashuga31 And they also actively support Open Source, create cool Open Source stuff (like Android), etc, etc. Google is a pretty good company, but I still don't want to give them too much info :P

@omni I never said they were saints and you should give them a whole bunch of info. But if I had to pick between selling my soul to microsoft or selling it to google, id choose google.
