I traced the keyframes and then added in the inbetweens myself as a little exercise. I tried to keep the timing as accurate as possible. Here's my shot right next to the shot that's currently on TV. !animation http://rainbowdash.net/url/774502

@tekkdan It could be that not enough money is going to the animation, (in 2011, the voice cast was getting paid so much that they didn't have enough money to pay anyone else and the show was almost canceled) but I think it's more likely that the producers have a fetish for their characters being "on model", and they probably think they can do that better than the people they pay to do that.

@northernnarwhal I think it's pretty funny, because the creator of Ren & Stimpy was asked to animate the opening sequence in "Bart Stops To Smell the Roosevelts", and he's like the definition of cartoony animation.

@redenchilada I guess that could work. I think most people are restricted by their pride, though. They'd only want to showcase the very best. Otherwise, most animators would have created a Let's Play channel by now, since those are such a mind-bogglingly easy way to make money.

@zeldatra I mean, just stuff like timelapses of animating a scene or action. I dunno. Might not help too much in the grand scheme of things but it's fun to get a backstage view from time to time.

I don't know how I can tone down animation quality without going the Flash puppet route. If I want to start releasing episodes of this series on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, I NEED to be animating it quicker, but I tried designing a puppet today and it made me sick to my stomach. What do I do? I don't want my animation to start looking like Family Guy or something, but I also don't want to take a year to release the next episode. This one was significantly longer than future episodes will be, but it'll still take a damn long time to animate.

@mrmattimation It looks sloppy and seems like a bad habit to get in to. I personally would never use anything like this and anything that involved 35 layers to animate something so basic is not worth a damn.

@scoot Given this, I'm inclined to believe it'll also work with more complicated shots if you experiment a bit. You're all old-fashioned with your animation so I don't expect this to appeal to you, however if I can find a way to animate shots in half the time with minimal quality reduction, I'm going to take that opportunity.

@mrmattimation You're basing this whole thing on one shape tween someone else made? I'm not old fashioned, I'm more in the camp that "If you're going to be an animator, actually animate stuff" instead of getting computers to make really poor looking inbetweens for you.
