  1. @whiterose Hi you!

  2. @thelastgherkin A lot. Depending on your device, you will probably not get ALL of these features, but you will at least get most: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/whats-new-in-android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-feature-review/

  3. @redenchilada It's supposed to rhyme? Since when?

  4. @thelastgherkin It's just not as cool as the new version. I don't know what version you run, but ICS is a GREAT improvement over Gingerbread.

  5. @redenchilada On the 6th day of RDN, @widget gave to me, six StatusNet bugs, five trolls, four flame wars, three hugs, two groups and a new member.

  6. @thelastgherkin It's a new pretty cool version of Android, only one semi-major release old (the newest one is Jellybean).

  7. @thelastgherkin ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich, the codename for Android 4.0

  8. On the 6th day of unix-mas, my sysadmin gave to me, six different runlevels, five minutes of sudo, for loops of running (and lots of punning), three standard filehandles, two forked processes and a new user id. #

  9. @techdisk They were like "Oh, hey, this stuff is fine. Just make sure the big Linux companies like Red Hat, SUSe and Canonical can also boot their stuff and we'll all be happy"

  10. @techdisk Still, Mac doesn't run the Linux kernel. They could've used so many interfaces, or just hide the browser border completely, but out of all the bad choices they went for putting a Mac border around their pro-Linux video. I can understand where all the drama is from (and frankly, this isn't the first time they cause drama. Going along with SecureBoot and UEFI, amongst many other things, has already severely damaged their reputation amongst the Linux community.

  11. @techdisk It's literally the whole video.

  12. @techdisk Even if it is a skin, it shouldn't be looking like Mac OS X. If aren't going to promote iOS using an Android skin either, are you?

  13. @techdisk A bit surprised at everyone seemingly yelling at The Linux Foundation, until I saw their latest video. Attached is a screenshot, I'm sure you can find out why people are a bit angry about having a video which is supposed to promote Linux look the way it does. http://ur1.ca/c4n44

  14. @techdisk Good evening

  15. @pony In general, you can do practically everything the average user wants to be able to do through GUIs. That's the whole point of GUIs. The real power-user stuff, like defining the login manager used and manage daemons, is something which you do on the command line. The command line is also, obviously, nice for useful scripts. For my Android, I have written a VERY simple script which can detect all the .apk files in a directory and install them in a matter of seconds. "find --name "*.apk" --exec pm install {} \;" is the script in question, if I could recall correctly. All it does is fine all .apk files, and lets the package manager install is when it finds one. These simple things can save so much time at times, and that's why I like the CLI. Also: https://identi.ca/climagic

  16. @redenchilada "sudo apt-get install openoffice", according to our news station a year back or so.

  17. @pony I started with GUIs as well, and still use them a lot, but whenever possible I prefer the CLI due to a lot of commands being quicker to execute than to use a GUI for that. Also because it makes me look like a 1337 h4x0r which makes people think I'm good with computers.

  18. @minti Because there would be no items in the category *badum tss* Okay, I'll let myself out...

  19. @redenchilada Ah, Puppy. Yeah, that one is quite advanced and sometimes unstable, so that could explain it. I also think that you can't do much with only a browser, but we're talking about someone who didn't manage to get used to the Window taskbar in the 95 days so we, at very least, have to start as minimal as possible. I hope that's understandable, at least.

  20. @zeldatra If you would've read the first word you would've known it was not for you anyway.

  21. @mushi The thing is, it wasn't an OS war, it was a "which system is best for the job at and" discussion. It just got out of hand because some vital information did not get communicated properly (and I'm not choosing a side as to where it went wrong. Communication failures are practically always due to mistakes at both sides)

Tuesday, 18-Dec-12 00:15:32 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  22. @redenchilada The fact that you describe it as an "angry rant" means you missed most of the discussing. Happens to me at times as well, though, so I don't blame you. I'm just getting a bit annoyed at "install Windows" when the system in question should only run a browser and this has been stated often, something Windows is simply not capable of (it needs the desktop environment). The other thing I was slightly annoyed about was you not stating a distro or version number or anything. Linux 3.6 for example is a huge improvement over Linux 2.6, just like kernel improvements between Windows versions. File manager software also improves through time. The thing is, the low amount of info made it impossible to judge if this was still relevant in general, even though it wouldn't be for the system in question. Sorry for my harsh replies, though, I was just getting enough of people seemingly ignoring the system's purpose.

  23. @zeldatra I wonder when "family member" turned into" friend", but he's in his 50s, AFAIK

Tuesday, 18-Dec-12 00:02:44 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  24. @redenchilada Did you miss the point where I was talking about the system ONLY RUNNING A BROWSER like I have mentioned about five times in the last five minutes?

Tuesday, 18-Dec-12 00:01:44 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  25. @zeldatra That's a good stance, I try to stick to that as well as much as life allows me to.

Tuesday, 18-Dec-12 00:00:36 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  26. @zeldatra A phone is unsuitable because it is more than a browser. Also, he wouldn't be able to read anything on it.

Monday, 17-Dec-12 23:59:42 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  27. @redenchilada You also did not mention any slightly useful info. Your argument is about as valid as saying it's hard to install Firefox on Windows 7 because Windows 3.1 crashed on you once. Also, as stated countless times by now, the system will not have a file manager, making your scenario impossible and thus irrelevant.

Monday, 17-Dec-12 23:58:49 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  28. @zeldatra I see you don't know it either, or are forgetting to mention things. Even then, why does he NEED a desktop if he'll use nothing but a browser? That's overcomplicating it. He gets a browser, and that's that. Nothing more. No desktop environment, no file manager, nothing but a browser. Long story short: Windows cannot be tweaked to be only a browser, and is therefore unsuitable for the task at hand.

Monday, 17-Dec-12 23:55:11 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  29. @redenchilada That is of no importance. The fact stays: Linux needs less maintenance for the end user.

  30. @unhipdruid Steam games working or not is of no importance for a system which will only be used for browsing the web and for nothing else. I do know how you feel, though (even though I don't run any non-free software myself)
